I'm a total newbie when it comes to upgrading.

I have an 2006 Trek 1000 and it has a damaged rear wheel. I just considered upgrading to better wheel instead of a stock wheel. It has a SRAM 850 12-26, 8 speed cassette attached. I do not want to upgrade to a higher speed or anything like that, but the wheels that I have been looking at usually state they are Campy or Shimano Cassette compatible. Would i be able to stick a comparable Shimano 8 speed cassette in the new wheels and be ready to ride with out any other major modifications to the front/rear derailleur which by the way the fronts are shimano 2203 and the rears are shimano tiagras. The shifters are shimano STI sora 8-speed.

The parts are not the best but they good for fitness rides. the framse is solid so I just want to base my upgrades around that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks !

Your SRAM 850 12-26 is directly compatible with a Shimano HG50 8 speed cassette. It may even be an upgrade over your original cassette (if it was a HG30).

As long as the drop-out width is the same as the original wheel, all will fit well. :)

Does this mean that Shimano and SRAM cassettes are directly compatible with each other or is it just with these specific components?

Yes, SRAM and Shimano are 100% interchangeable for cassettes and chains. Derailleurs and shifters are not interchangeable. Shimano shifters must be used with shimano derailleurs and SRAM with SRAM.

All SRAM 8s and 9s cassettes will fit on "Shimano compatible" hubs except for 10s dura-ace hubs.
