Looking around at bikes, threads like glennjd's 'Shimano wh550 wheels' and responses to previous questions i've asked (see Aust/NZ folder) its fairly apparent that I should upgrade the 550 wheels on the new bike I'm going to get. I want to exchange them on purchase to minimise the cost. Whilst i've seen a lot of people have a go at the 550's i haven't seen a lot of suggested replacements. Help me please.

I'm 95kg and want strength and durability rather than decreased weight. Budget is around $700 (max) (for a max swap over cost around $400).

Options so far:
Velocity Deep V $320
Mavic Aksium $350
Mavic Ksyrium Equipe $650
Leave the R550's and buy 10 cases of beer for summer.

Check out www.neuvationcycling.com (http://www.neuvationcycling.com) John Neugent has INCREDIBLE WHEELSETS for not a lot of money that will spank all the Brands you have listed.

For strength and durability, I'd go with standard 32 spoke "built-up" wheels. One suggestion would be Ultegra hub with Mavic OP or Velocity Aerohead rims, but there are lots of other fine hubs and rims out there. If you can find a LBS or other wheelbuilder who has a quality reputation believe you'll be very satisfied with the end results.

+1

I upgraded my 550's to Ultegra hubs 32 spoke with mavic open pro rims. Huge improvement and much better value than most of the ready made wheelsets. Should be about right for your budget.

I weigh about the same as you and love my campy zondas. Since you ride shimano quite clearly look at a set of Fulcrum racing 3s. You'll save weight, and get a tough great looking set of wheels. RRP <$800AUD

Theres a lot of personal perference. It does depend a lot on what kind of riding you do and how much budget you have.

I'm assuming that the LBS where you are buying the bike is going to swap the wheels for a tradein price, so unless you are set on some particular wheels and have the $$$, that limits you what is at the shop.

Velocity has an advantage as there seems to be better potential to get replacement parts when the wheels are older than some of the other brands and there rims are a quality product. So, from your list, Velocity gets my vote.

I have had good experiences with the R550 wheelset, I started riding when i was 100+kg, I am now down to double digits. The wheelset is still going strong.

I had to true the wheel and check the spoke tension tho. But thats all part of wheel maintenance.

I also built my own wheelset using 32 hole 105 hubs, DT Swiss spokes and ambrosio rims. I have to say I am quite impressed with the 105 level components.

Overall, I would say a 32 spoked wheelset gets my confidence. The design is tried and proven.

Thanks all for your words of wisdom.

I bought the new bike today - went a step up to a bike which came with Mavic Kysrium Equipe wheels.

However I made the decision to swap the Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheels for some handbuilt shop wheels (mavic rims, DT spokes - heaps of them (32)).

Doing this swap got me pedals, Scott Pro shoes and change for a case of beer.

Cheers

Ahh, should have got DT hubs. You would never have had to replace anything in the fuure.

As Bobby OCR once suggested to me, Velocity Blade is currently on my waiting list. I'm still looking for more info about it though

That was a great trade up in terms of what you need to enjoy some decent riding. The mavics are great but some shop built wheels would be fine for most people and situations. The shop seems to really have been happy to work with your request which helps everyone (ie I'm sure you'll refer sme people to the shop and they made a sale).
