This question has probably been asked before, but I have an oopurtunity to get an older Schwinn MTB, a Sierra, can these be turned into a hybrid?
I like the thinner tires better.

No problem - there are plenty of thinner tyres to fit 26in wheels - talk to your LBS and see what they've got. I did it last year with an old early nineties Giant Coldrock. No problems at all, rides really nicely –*250km in three days along the Loire valley in France last summer, panniers and all. It's probably heavier than a 'proper' hybrid, but then it only cost me about 100 euros altogether so I can put up with that. I find the wide gaps between gear ratios annoying on the road compared to a closer ratio road block, but it doesn't bother me enough to want to pay good money to do anything about it!
