Flat tire, found a piece of glass that was just slightly taking a nick out of the tube:

Would it be safe to ride? These tires might be old (came with the bike when I bought it) so is it safe to ride them to the shop to get new tires?

... so is it safe to ride them to the shop to get new tires?Yeah, they look plenty safe. The biggest danger is if the slice is large enough to allow a small bubble of tube to poke through (an aneurism). That happens more often with sidewall slices, but it's easy to take care of. Just slip a small piece of tough, thin fabric (called a boot) between the tube and inside of the tire. When out on the road those mylar power bar wrappers make great boot material as do dollar bills. Anyway, as long as the tube doesn't try to bubble out under pressure, either because the nick is too small or you've booted the tire you're good to go. I've ridden training tires fifty or more miles with a power bar or dollar bill boot when I was unfortunate enough to get a sidewall slash on a long ride away from home.

yep, I'd ride it, but I'd first patch it from the inside just for peice of mind.
I usually gaffer a small piece of thin plastic over the damaged bit.

That mylar wrapping reinforcement idea sounded smart. I'll have to do it to my recently punctured tyre. :D

one time I had a big cut in the tyre casing and used an old train ticket (which is made of thick paper much like playing cards, you know the cards you play poker and blackjack with)
did the job just fine

tyre :o

Thanks, all. Looks like it's holding fine but all the same, I'll probably replace it.

You are going to be replacing a lot of tyres if you get rid of them each time you get a cut. Your choice.

For boots I have been using those large patches that come in patch kits. They are too big for road tires but work pretty well for booting. Just glue them to the inside of the tire so they stay in place.

For a hole that big, you might try shoe goo to fill it in. If you don't then you can pick up a pointy pebble that will stick in the hole and eventually puncture your tube.

I would also not use a booted tire on my front wheel.

Thanks for this tip. It's logical and well worth remembering. :)

That tire is fine. If want to pitch it, send it to me and I'll get another 3-5K miles out of it.
