" A Royale with cheese "...I gotta say, this is the ugliest wheel I've ever seen, and pardon the pun, but name reminds me of Pulp Fiction.

From the 2007 Specialized brochure:
SHOOTING STAR: The Roval Classique Rapide Star is the fastest spoked wheel in the world. How?

Let’s make it simple: FD = CDApv2

What? You need an explanation? This equation quantifies what you already know: it’s a lot harder to go 30mph than 15mph. This force-of-drag equation tells us that it’s four times harder. That’s right: doubling your speed takes four times the effort. If it sounds like the wind is getting the better end of the deal, we have a way to settle the score.

When you’re pedaling (and you’re not on a hill) the primary force you’re fighting is the wind resistance (or the force of drag, FD in our equation). The force of drag is the result of the density of the air (p), the coefficient of drag (CD), the velocity of the rider through the air (v), and the rider’s frontal area (A). Our R&D factory can’t do much for you on any of these elements, except frontal area. Which is where the Roval Star hub comes into play.

Wind tunnel tests offer conclusive proof that with the same effort you’ll simply go faster on Roval Rapide Star wheels.

The Roval Star hub results in wheels with half the frontal area of standard wheels. This means that they provide huge reductions in the force of drag, so you go faster with the same effort. In fact, if you rode a 40km course at 250 watts on a still day, you would be 30 seconds faster on a pair of Roval Rapide Star wheels than if you had been on Mavic Ksyriums. Take that, wind!

Not only that, but the Star hub results in the highest drive efficiency of any spoked wheel. So any power you put to the pedal goes immediately and efficiently to moving you forward.

The Star and other Roval wheels are defined by:

Quality: They are hand-built to a tolerance of .2mm
Aerodynamics: rim profiles are aero and spokes are bladed
Efficiency: Lacing patterns are innovative and nipples are hidden
Light weight: Features like low spoke counts, titanium freehub bodies, and carbon rims ensure the lightest wheel possible for a given design

Personally, I think the wheel looks awesome. It's got a very different yet cool looking hub (or whatever that red plastic stuff is near the hub). It's hard to get a good look at the hub, but I can say that I would probably buy a set if they were a deep dish wheel and I had money.

I don't praticularly 'like' the design but I think it is increibly innovative and has alot of potential, like the REV-X design from Spinergy. It probably is fast, and I'd like to ride them, but depending on the price, probably never will. I think the red hub shell is way too bright and they should release one in complete black, or white.

Just noticed the comparison used with the aerodynamics of a ksyrium. HAHAHA. Most wheels would be 30 seconds faster :D

I'd like to hear from someone that has ridden them- get this: 1750g, around $2300 and that red thing is the hub.

Still is butt ugly though.

Hold on- can you imagine a Tango with them ?! :p

Wow. Impressive. I wonder why they didn't compare to Zipp? Hmmmm......prolly since the best Zipp wheels get you about .4-.5 mph at 25mph (about 40kph), which saves over a minute...like 1:15....over that 40k. So....Roval, butt ugly wheels ....or should I keep my Stratus DV's.......hmmmmm I think I'll hang on to my Stratus DV's.

Now if Specialized put Zertz thingees in the spokes, THAT'd be a wheel that everyone would be scramblin' to get...

That last comment, hell yes.

Don't talk about Tangos with those wheels, some heads might implode.

Agreed ...real fugly

Oh Vanity, if wearing a bumble bee outfit made you faster than anything else available at the time would you do it?
