Yes.

It is best done by your LBS, they will have the new pin for the chain.

my new shimano xt front derailleur seems to have no way to get the chain inside the cage, i have to separate the chain to do it?It may seem half-assed, but you can remove the screw at the back of the cage, and "slip" the chain through the temporary gap you create when you GENTLY spread the plates apart.

Just make certain that the screw and/or washer is/are replaced SECURELY (loctite will help, but there may be enough residual loctite on the screw threads).

Yes. If the chain is a nine speed get an SRAM gold connector and if its an 8speed get an SRAM normal connector. Makes splitting and rejoining the chain a piece of piss.

HOLY COW!?!

Ironically, the method suggested by Alfeng possibly saved my butt today. Chain broke twice during my ride and the second time I didnt put the chain through the mech by mistake. Not wanting to break the chain AGAIN (thus weakening it further) I took the screw out, separated the plates, slipped chain through and did up screw. Mech is a 1998 STX RC.
