Setting up a racer for commuting

Hi all,

I've spent the last month or so commuting on a racer-style bike (A 2005 Gitane 1800 (http://www.gitane.com.au/2005mach1800.html)) and as winter sets in, I'm looking to adapt it more to commuting.

I ride a 23km round trip commute each day mainly over dedicated bike paths and with a bit of road.

I'm really interested in any changes to equipment (bigger tyres? saddle?) or setup (drop bar angle?) that people have tried and been happy with. My main considerations are making the bike a bit more comfortable over small bumps and corrugation, and seeing if a different position will make it a more relaxed ride and give me less excuses not to ride each day.

So far I'm thinking:

* Change 700x23 to 700x28 tyres (comfort, bump handling)
* Fitting light fenders/mudguards (less muck in the rain)
* Possibly changing my drop bar angle upwards (more upright position)

Is there anything I missed or any comments? Anyone tried anything similar?

The alternative was to look for a touring or cyclocross style bike as a replacement, but I'm hoping to avoid that cost.

Why not hot up the gearing on the Cafe bike? :)

On the Road bike, fit one of those stem risers I have here.

I'm now thinking of going fixed in the front of the Cafe bike and getting the rear cassette you were recommending. Should make for a fun bike :)

A 25 or 28 on the road bike is certainly an option, though I just bought a pair of Rubino Pro's...
