I record Hours @ levels or HR zones.

Like bikes, not all hours are equal.

I go by km's that way if your riding slower you can still get the same kms done.

I go by hours and like 2Lap I record time in HR zones, Actually the Polar does it automagically for me :-)

Hours, time in HR zones and perceived effort. Love that Polar!

As a coach, I ask all athletes under my care to record, time, distance, cadence (average), and HR. because not all can afford the HR monitor that records time spent in zones I ask each rider to training within certain zones for specific time periods. So a concise diary should have all of the above info. However, ALL EXTRANEOUS CRAP ASIDE, Time is more essential than distance . I even go to the extent of telling my athletes that I don't care if their speedometer doesn't work, as long as the cadence and timer are working on the computer I'm happy.

I use the same course 3 days a week...27.5 miles (44.26 km) and check my time against the historical time. One day a week I go by time (about 3 hours total) and one day a week I go by distance (no specific course).

Jtfleming,

I think I do the same. Typically if you have a training routine then you are doing the same miles (kms) and unless your improvement is dramatic, that will end up being close to the same hours.

I used to train by hours, but now I train by miles and speed. When you are training for a 45 mile road race that takes under 2 hours to complete, training for 2-3 hours make not increase my fitness enough to finish. Races are measure by distance not time. Over the winter I work to increase my endurance to 150% of the distance I intend to race at the next year. If you can ride 60 miles in training, you can finish a 40 mi road race. After I have increased my endurance, I start working on speed early in the spring. I use intervals for speed work.

It's nice to keep track of Kms, but I train by hours. (10 km in a head wind is much different than 10 km in a tail wind), but an hour is an hour.

By hours, but it's always nice to see how far you went and how fast you went. I have a specific route and like to see if I'm improving on my Avg. If I get close to home and see I'm going to improve on my previous time, I just take a detour.

I go by hours, since I do training on my mountainbike as well. You can do as little as 15km's on a mtb, but it can take you 90mins, and have your avg. heart rate far higher than on a road ride.
