I know a shop in Brescia (italy) that can assemble you any zipp wheel saving weight + price. Examples of some wheels sold by this shop:

Zipp 303 rim + Soul-Kozak Ultralight hubs + Sapim CX-Ray Black = 977 grams (naked without blockings!) and 1160 euros. 404 rim = 1160 grams and 1200 euros.

Zipp 404 rim with balls + Shimano Dura Ace hubs 2x24 holes + Sapim CX-Ray Black = 1320 grams and 1390 euros (they have many spokes...)

If you want I can put you in contact with them...

If you don't mind the shipping distance, or hopefully know someone in the US...

In the early fall, high end cycling components get cheaper on ebay. Around late September, or early October. Only lasts for about a month, so you have to watch. I guess people aren't thinking about buying gear towards the end of the season.

In September 05, I picked up a set of used 404's in tubie for $USD650, came with two sets of used Conti's. A lot cheaper than they would be in the spring. Chucked in a bid, figured I'd get knocked out, but I got them. Sweet ride, extremely smooth, a lot smoother than the Rolfs and K's I've ridden before. Last fall, I got a set of slightly used Cinelli RAM bars for $200. Also very sweet.

One 404 story... while out riding last year, some road maintenance cretin had cut a groove in the pavement, around 3" wide and 1" deep. I didn't see it rounding a turn after a quick descent, only had enough time to straighten up, and I can still hear that whack! whack! as I hit it. Figured I had lunched the 404's, but they emerged unscathed. So they're delicate, but not that delicate.
