Where do you clamp on a CF bike?

Going to start to build my first CF bike soon. The question now is, where on the bike can I safely apply the repair stand clamp? Given the odd geometry of the CF frame and seat post, the only round tubes are the seat tube and a short segment on the CF seat post.

I clamp the frame with a spare rear axle skewer in the trainer. ;)

I don't have one of those. :p

Is the the frame you have one with an integrated post, or a standard one that you insert?

If its the latter, what I would do is buy a cheapie alloy seat post, stick it in the frame, and then clamp at the post.

If its the former, then I think it would depend on where the round sections were, and how worried I'd be about crushing them.

It's a conventional frame requiring a separate seat post. So yes, your suggestion of using an alloy seat tube would be a work around solution. Thanks! The need to readjust saddle height (even with a tape) would be a bit of a pain though... :o

Naw. Mark the saddle height with a piece of masking tape before you remove it from the bike.

Ok, point accepted.

But seriously, do pro mechanics looking after all those CF only bikes all do it this way?

Pro mechanics often use a type of stand that clamps the frame by the fork dropouts (front wheel removed, of course) and the bottom bracket sits in a cradle.

Mechanics also cut down the clamp on park stands so they'll fit onto shorter seatposts.

Clamping any lightweight material (carbon, ti, al) is a bad idea.
