Query Zefal HPX Pump Use

Hi there.

The Bianchi Strada LX I recently bought has a Zefal HPX pump on it. On
the upper portion of the pump are two markings. one is 'hp' and the
other is 'x'. The end of the pump can be twisted so that an arrow
lines up with one or the other marks.

What arethese marks for? I am thinking that the 'hp' mark is for
pumping to a normal pressure and the 'x' mark is for pumping to a
higher pressure. Is this correct?

No. When set to the X mark the pump spring is active, so you can
place the pump on the frame. On the HP mark the spring is locked out,
so as not to interfere with pumping.

Sometimes it is useful to put the pump into the frame in the X
position (with spring active), then you can switch it to the HP
position to lock it onto the frame. Then, the pump will not fall off
when going over rough roads / cobblestones, especially if the spring
is hardly compressed.

I "used" them for years, but that pretty much meant carrying them
around on my frame. I rarely get flats on the road and use a floor
pump at home.

But they seem good to me -- I haven't used a Blackburn frame pump so
can't compare.

Hi there.

If the HPX is as good as the HP was then it is a great pump. I once
repaired a Zefal HP pump after it fell off a bicycle and was run over
by a car. I took the plunger section out of the pump and tapped in a
dowel the same size as the interior of the pump. When I reassembled
the pump it worked as good as new. I had it for many years after that.
I don not think there are many pumps you could do that with.

Work very well, actually. Remember to click it to "HP" when you start
pumping.

I have a pump peg on my frame which takes the Zefal HPX very neatly. I
seldom leave home without it, and it's gotten me back up and running at
least twice. No complaints.

It's no substitute for having a proper floor pump at home, though.

The Zefal beats the sh** out of a Blackburn mini-pump. I have both,
and the mini-pump is a pain in the ass. As between the full-sized
Blackburn and HPX, I would imagine that it is a toss-up in terms of

Many people still consider that the best frame pump ever on the
market.

A ten year old one is all I used to pump tires during an independent
coast-to-coast tour. It did the job routinely, every two days on our
three bikes, plus the occasional flat. It's still going strong.

The HP was introduced in the mid to late '70s. It was unchanged until
the mid '80s, when the HPX was introduced as a hardware-free frame fit
model (the original HP was frame-fit at the head, but used an umbrella
clip at the handle).

The HPX was unchanged for about 20 years. They redid the head last
year, so that it could switch back and forth between presta and
schrader without reassembling the head.

The fact that a part could go unchanged for that long (basically 30
years) in today's market speaks volumes about its quality.

"HP" locks out the spring for pumping tires. "X" lets the spring engage
so it will stay on your bike when not in use.

I have an HPX that's been going strong for eight or ten years. On another
bike I had a newer Blackburn frame pump that died as the plastic parts
slowly deterioated. Go for the HPX if you want it to last for years and not
eventually die on the side of the road.

I've had both and they both work well enough for me to not have noticed any real
difference in function. They're both very good.

I've owned and used both. No comparison, stick with the HPX (although the
Blackburn is passable).

Hi there.

I see that the Zefal HPX sells for about $30 Cdn ($32 US). Since the
Bianchi Strada LX complete with the Zefal HPX pump only cost me $25
Cdn ($23.86 US) I can assume I got a very good deal.
