View Full Version : Bikes in 100 years - what do you think?

A quick stab at guessing what we will have in the distant future. Here are my guesses.

Industry : Electric assisted bikes will be a dominant form of transport. Most families would have one car and maybe an electric bike for each person.

Seats : Intelligient seats that alter their shape based on your riding position. They would also have cooling technologies to prevent chaffing of your vital organs.

Shifting : Autoshift bikes would make a comeback, probably computer controlled. Simply enter a cadence range, and the computer would shift for you so you maintain your cadence in that range. They would probably be in the range of 30-40 speeds. Maybe an internal hub linked with derailer, like Sheldon brown's 63 speed bike?

Frames : Folding bikes would be the norm. They would be made of existing materials such as alumnium and carbon, or brand new composites that are as yet undiscovered, or maybe even exotic materials such as concrete tubing (heavily modified of course). Wheels will also be foldable, and most folding bikes will be able to fit into a backpack. There may also be another dominant design composed of non folding bikes with fairings to shield the rider from the rain and wind. They would have a range of stability devices such as computer controlled kickstands that automatically deploy when the bike stops a large rear basket to hold shopping.

Any thoughts?

We'll have invisible bikes like Wonder Woman's invisible plane.

I don't think they'll change much, the technology yes, but not the shape, we'll still pedal, we'll have to shift them, if we changed them, it'd take away that passionate feeling from cycling.

I can pretty safely guess that in 100 years I won't be riding one:D .

You assume civilization will survive the next 100 years.

The way things are going, in 100 years people will spend their entire lives in bed, with an Intel chip implanted in their brains. Their entire reality will be virtual.

I agree, its sad but true

I think that they will be very recognizable, in that they will be close to configuration which we now have. One only has to look a one of the Wright Brothers lightweights from about 1911 to note the striking similarity with todays bikes, as contrasted against the Wright Flier, and something an F22 Raptor aircraft. They got it correct with regard to the frame a long time ago.

As to materials, anything goes!

+1. Materials will be the biggest difference.

As to the Wright Flyer, it so happens that flight testing is being done on modern fighters equipped with wings that "warp" like the wings of the Wright Flyer did.

Plus ça change, plus ç'est la même chose.

Traditional size frames made out of steel with leather saddles and 32 spoked wheels.

Compact frames and carbon fibre will be gone. :D

There will only be one team on the TDF called the United States Empire Pro Team and there will still be a drug problem.

Trek still won't have a hiddenset!

6.8kg will be heavy

Maybe like this - the MBK looks a bit like this in this year's TDF
