Lefevere comments on East Europeans

View Full Version : Lefevere comments on East Europeans

CyclingNews reports that Patrick Lefevere is quoted in Het Nieuwsblad saying: "No more former
Eastern bloc riders for me, I can't stomach any more of them." (
http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/?id=2003/aug03/aug25news2 )

In my opinion, this is a very bigoted statement, and it lowers my opinion of Lefevere a lot. Is this
type of sentiment considered socially acceptable in Western Europe?

I know that in the USA, if you were to say in public that you were no longer hiring any Mexicans
because you were sick of them, you would instantly (and justifiably) become the subject of scorn,
lawsuits, and criminal prosecution.

Holding the US up as a model of the public benefit of an aggressive tort system is beyond ludicrous.

It is only exemplary of the Lefevere of the last years.

As in :

"That lazy asshole" = Van Heeswijck "Non-achievers can always find a job at Lotto" = before 2001,
when Lotto would turn out UCI Top 5 for most of the seacon. "What that mutha thinks he's doing ?!" =
about De Cauwer "he's a liar and a crook" = Garzelli .......

Scorn, sure. Criminal prosecution? No. The First Amendment.

I believe he also call Fred Rodriquez a whiner and lazy as well when he didn't resign him.

Does this mean that QS fired Kascheschkine (sp)?

Yes, especially if it is against arabs (much more than east euros).

Lefevre's been quite the loose cannon of the last few years. It's a luxury to be able to talk like
that and not annoy sponsors.

Depends who you are. If you're a public figure you get lambasted for
it. If you're a CEO telling your VP of HR, you probably get away with whatever you want. Lefevre's
just stupid for saying what he thinks when all he needs to do is act in silence.

Always an equal opportunity employer, though, the USPS-BF team. See in the same article they swiped
_a_ VdB from QSD, now they're down to one.

no. Kashenkin gave 'his word', and then signed for CA. Muravyev (from the espoirs team) now
follows him.

Lefevere has a problem understanding 'words' it seems, this was also the case with Garzelli
last year.

Im' curious whether they have Pecharroman's 'word' or signature.

and "that race from Nevele" = The Planckaerts

I am not nearly as surprised by the fact that he can get away with a comment like that as I am that he thinks something like that. I could write the longest list of riders from western Europe who are lazy and I would be happy to take a rider like Vino even if he is eastern European.

Ah, but he is Western-Asian.

Of course there is no eastern Europe anymore. Go to poland and they will tell you that you are in central europe. On a differnt note I think CCC-Polsat might be a better team then some western European ones.

that's just regretable. it's just another example of a misconception.
