The real value of riding with a power device
I have been training with a Powertap for about 6 months now, and 99% of my training is by myself. However, on Saturday, I did a century put on by a local cycling club that features 10,000 feet of climbing. I was able to ride in different groups during the event and consistently noticed the wide fluctuations in power output of riders without a power device. First, let me say that on flat ground in the aero bars, I can ride at 22 mph at about 220 watts. So, I figured climbing at 250-270 watts during a century was fine. I also didn't want to drop too much below that on the flats, but stay consistent.
On the climbs on Saturday, the riders were putting out 320-330 watts, or more, and I would drift off the back if I maintained my power goals. However, when the road flattened out, the power of the group would drop to below 200 and often down to 125ish. Very little consistent power output. If I would maintain the same power, I would BLOW by them. I even received comments about "attacking" when all I was doing was maintaining.
I know they were riding by PE(perceived exertion), but look at the implications for riding an IM. The big watts while climbing or into a headwind is going to hurt you toward the end of the bike and into the run. Also, if riding by PE, it is hard to know were the breakdown in pace is happening, thus, your overall time will be slower. I drove to Penticton on Sunday and registered for IM Canada next year, which will be my first IM. I plan on racing with my Powertap next year. Kevin
