UCI race Categories

Since 2001, over 90,000 cyclist's have joined Cycling Forums to discuss topics from general cycling to equipment, training, racing and travel or vacation destinations (especially in europe during the tour de france). We also feature an great deals in our online store, 100's of articles, classifieds and product reviews.

Can anybody give me any idea as to what it means if a race has a UCI category of, say 1.8, or 2.1.

I understand it may indicate the level of difficulty of the race, but what specifically? Does it relate to points on offer, on what is rated more difficult, a 2.1 category race, or a 2.5 category.

Finally, what would the TDF be categorized as, I would imagine this have the highest rating of all races.

Perhaps there is a website which contains all these answers?
