gear problems

hi i have a tonwsend mnt bike with 21 gear grip twist gears. the bike however seems to be out of synch by one cog with the gears. the handler bar says its in the 1st gear when on the cogs its on the 2nd and it alos wont go down to the last cog (supposed to be number 7) any ideas to help plz???

The most likely cause is that the derailleur needs adjustment. You can do this yourself; it's not a difficult job, just needs a screwdriver and a way of pedalling your bike where it won't move.
