need to buy wheels?????
View Full Version : need to buy wheels?????
i am a bike rider around 81 kg i need some wheels, light, enought rigid and not too expansive.
suggest me something and tell me to positive and negative of the wheel you suggest me!
thanks
This is going to start a war but I would suggest anything from the Bontrager Race Series. I have a pair on my road bike and they are fantastic, at least they work for me. Everyone is different. The Bontys rims are slightly oversized so removing and replacing a tire is a pain, but they are worth it to me.
Ritchey Protocol LTD are great, light, but only averagely (???) stiff.
Easton wheels have a good rep.
At 81kg, I'd suggest building a set. DT240S hubs are amazing, and you will NEVER slip a pawl, because they don't have pawls. 240s hubs, DT comp rear spokes, aerolite front, alloy nipple, Aerohead/open pro or if you really want a nice set Niobium 30mm. aim for 28 spokes on the rear, 24 on the front. you could even triplet lace the rear (9 on the NDS, 18 on the DS) which would give you better power transmission, but you would lose a little stiffness. Radial lace the front and it would build a great, relatively light all-round set of wheels.
I'm using a pair of Bontrager Racelite wheels.
Weight is at 1660grs + 102grs skewers (confirmed), they are pretty rigid and have a fabulous rotation.
My weight is 94kgs and so far no problems at all .. I also own a pair of Bontrager Race's and no problems with them either, ever.
thank and continu giving your opinion please i need the most comment possible to choose!

I am digging my new ROL Volant wheels so far (I weight about 85 kg)... They are considerably lighter than anything else I have ridden, so I can't compare them to other high-end wheels. But these have held up very well over the 400 miles or so that I have put on them, even over the rougher roads in my area.
If only they made a singlespeed version as well... :)
Try a pair of Neuvation Custom wheels. I have a set of the AERO M28 wheels. They are rigid enough...and they are what I would consider to be a quality wheel at a reasonable price. The customer service with this wheelsets will be far better than anything you have ever experienced, if you need service at all!

does anyone have thoughts/opinions of Shimano Ultegra Wheelset? I am contemplating as I can get a good deal (~$300).

I just bought a new 2004 Dura-Ace Wheelset on huge sale for 300 (they were marked down from 800) I think the big difference between the two sets is the weight, and i alsolutely love the DAs. I dont think its the best deal in the world but its def not gunna rob you.
Try a pair of Neuvation Custom wheels. They are about as custom as a Fuji frame.
Anything from Ultegra up are great in Shimano wheels. I really like their DA wheels.
I think I will just keep saving my money for some Ksyriums. I have read good reviews for those and have good experience with Mavic. Of course, I have to wait longer...

Just get a set of ROL wheels... Instead of being from a French company, they are made right in your own backyard (in Denver anyway). The reviews on them are very good, and my experience backs it up.
And you will not beat their level of customer service.
Ahah! If there are three things I love it is quality assurance, quality customer service, and above all local business. Do have any suggestions as to model type?

I have the Volant, which is their low-end model (aero rims, bladed spokes, weighs about 1650 grams) at $370... So I guess it really depends on what you're looking for. My next wheelset will probably be the d'Huez, just so I can have a 200 grams lighter bike... :)
I have ridden both Mavic and Fulcrum (Campagnolo) wheels and have had no problems with either of them, so I would recommend them.
