The doping question is interesting. I originally was going to answer like you did, then changed my opinion on a whim. But I am thinking more along the lines like you now. It would depend a lot on what you think your chances are of making it undoped. Its a bit of a catch 22. If you don't dope, you increase the risk of failure. If you do, you may still wonder afterwards if you had it in you to do it without drugs. In any case, I'm not sure I'd be able to get the expertise to dope properly anyway personally. To me, standing on top of the world is more important than the journey (at least with Everest). If I could get there by helicopter, I would.
There are many more interesting and challenging mountains than Everest. So if it was just about the challenge, I may try one of the other peaks instead. But then you don't have bragging rights. The average layman knows Everest and little else.

New topic if anyone's interested.
Has anyone here climbed or thought of climbing Everest?
If so would you dope (use of Oxygen doesn't count as doping)?I know 2 people who have done it( 1 Alpine style,1 expedition style). They tell me that Everest has been done so many times that it doesn't interest serious climbers very much. There are many more technically demanding climbs elsewhere, including the US (particularly Alaska) and Patagonia. The last time I looked at costs the lowest price was around $US25K for a package deal for a week or so. For that price you get hauled up a series of fixed ropes like a haulbag...not real climbing at all. Climbing Alpine style won't change the cost appreciably (the highest cost is the permit from the Nepalese Govt.) and for climbing expedition style (fixing own ropes, hiring teams of Sherpas etc.)...the sky is the limit but $US100k is the starting point.
If you want a serious challenge...drink a case of beer and try to climb your living room wall. It's difficult but not impossible, it's a lot of fun and it doesn't destroy the fragile environment of Everest, which is in serious danger of being overwhelmed by the garbage dumped by rich Westerners.
My inflated sense of self-esteem is largely due to the major accomplishment of making it through the "Death Zone" to the light switch, at which point I fell off and (fortunately ) landed on the couch where I was forced by weather conditions (A major frost and fierce storms originating in the marital bedroom.) to beg for rescue.

I'm considering it (years away) if and when I have the time and money. The thing that worries me most is the frost bite and potential for losing appendages. I agree with you regarding the accesibility and climbing/mountaineering certainly seems to be 'in'. It's no longer as cool as it once was and if I went I don't konw if I'd go with one of the big expeditions or try to go it more minimally.
I'm undecided about the doping, but I have a slightly reverse logic. I'd never dope in competition because it's cheating. But doping for this may reduce risk and be a good investment and you aren't cheating (debatable). If you're spending 50-70K to get to the summit I think I'd do everything possible to ensure I made it. Still undecided though.
I saw the IMAX movie Everest this summer.....no way in hell. :p

Until 2003, 1314 people who climbed on Everest's top but there is 167 deaths !
I have a friend who make the summit 2 times, the first time at 16 or 17year old with his father and the second with his wife! Maybe , he could make it a third time with his sons !

http://pagesperso-orange.fr/claire-zeb/index.htmlWow...So by that calculation...your chance of dying on the climb is 1 in 9. Pretty scary odds.
FS - I'd dope, omerta style though.

[QUOTE=Bro Deal]Uh-oh. That just reminded me of something I hate even more than traditional X-mas music: rock bands that do X-mas covers.

Gee, there's an original pick up line from the good doctor, eh?
I have an eye appointment tomorrow. I sure hope he doesn't hit on me though, as it's my husband's cousin. :D
Everest . . . impressive ambitions. That's one thing I can assure you I've never considered and never will. I know my limits. :)

On the subject of Mountain Climbing Tours, I ran into this guy at a party who has taken two small groups up Mt. Rainier. After some discussion, I worked out that this guy had little experience in climbing (not that I have much). Anyway, it really scared me that this guy was taking newbies up the mountain without extra gear in case of a storm.
About a month later, that disaster on Mt. Hood happened. I was really hoping that the guide for that tour had provisioned for a worst case scenario.

Are you pouting? :pWe just had two new respected members come in here and post on a very interesting topic, and you two lovely middle-school sleepover BFF's, have hijacked the discussion onto a meaningful chat about doctors hitting on you and Don Johnson.
Note to observers - please feel free to interupt at anytime with anything you like to post.
