View Full Version : assos
bought some assos bib shorts & intermediate jersey 4 months ago & have to say that it was worth every penny anyone else wearing assos &whats your thoughts ?
i ride with a guy and he only wears assos. he calls it "the most". i was like HUH??? MOST?? most what? he replied by saying the most comfy, the most expensive, etc. ha ha ha
I tend to buy whatever is on sale. I am not impressed by high prices and team jerseys. As long as I am bright enough for the auto drivers to see me and I am comfortable, that is all that matters! IMHO, Assos is overpriced, along with Pearl iZumi, Bellwether, and some Cannondale clothing. I have found some good Adidas at a good price and some Ascent Jerseys that were on sale. And I bought a bunch of Insport Baggy Shorts that were 50% off. I never tried bibs but I don't think I would find them comfortable.

You don't know what your missing. I've gone through many different bibs, and so far, Assos bibs are the only ones that work for me....although I do plan on giving Descente Optimas a try. On the 4th, 5th, 6th, and so on hour on the bike, the right bibs/shorts are key methinks.
Shorts.....egads man, why do you hate yourself so?
I have allways wondering how good those $200 ASSOS bibshorts shoud be compared to others brands $60 bibshorts. I wear a Santini bibshorts- they cost me $60 (bougt on sale)- i dont think i need something better than profs do. As i am new to cycling I bought "Teams" clothing on sale (online) not to look like a prof - it is was just easyer to choose. It is really pain to choose the plain clothig- each manufacturer has his own super truper technologycal fabrycs with super truper cut that it is hard to understand what you pay for. And the top of shelf prices from my point of view are for those customers buying price, not product. My next clothing will be plain- just not the top of shelf for sure.
Own a few pairs from supermarket cheapie to mid-range and Assos. For weekday morning short training rides, anything would do. But for those long hard weekend rides, Assos sure beats mid-high range Pearl Izumi and Castelli. My ass can feel that difference. But can I live without it, yes I can. But Assos is nice if you can afford it.

Yep, don't see any advantage in Assos jerseys. There are far better alternatives out there.
My tender bottom stays soft thanks to Sugoi RS Flex. On sale at campmor.com for 59.99. :p
I wore Assos for ~20 years. I have to say that I no longer feel that they're worth the 2x-3x uplift over other bibs. I can get 3 pair of Vermarc bibs for less than 1 pair of the latest/greatest Assos. Anyone who trains regularly/frequently probably needs 4-6 pairs of bibs to get through the week. That would require upwards of $1000 US (maybe $1,500) in Assos bibs alone for riding gear.
I ain't got that much cash and if I did I probably would spend it elsewhere.

I think one can separate out how you look at this,
1) Technical merit. (No consideration for money)
2) Cost. ( No consideration for technical merit)
3) Cost benefit. This can be subjective based on your own value system.
At this stage, I'd say that Assos wins on pure technical merit (for most butts). Cost benefit would be a totally different discussion.

Bibs/shorts are like saddles. It's an entirely personal decision. For me, comfort is worth any amount of money, so I won't buy a cheaper, less comfortable bit of kit just to save money at the expense of ass health.
I get by on 3 pairs of Assos bibs. I just do laundry every three days. No big hairy deal. My investment in those FI.13 S2 bibs is $540. Right now, new FI.13 S2 bibs can be had for $205/pr. I've got about 2 years/10000 miles on my set of Assos bibs, and they've got plenty more life left in 'em. Even if I had to replace them every two years....$300/year for bibs is fine by me. My Assos Roubaix knickers are perfecto, just like my bibs.
Assos jerseys. I haven't bought the new top of the line jersey from them. I do have a Swiss team jersey and a Mu Mu jersey, and they are, by far, the best fitting jerseys I've ever worn, especially on the bike. Voler, Descente, Pearl Izumi, Castelli all fall well short as far as jerseys go, although the Descente jerseys are pretty dang good.

Agreed. I, and my ass, like my Vermarcs every bit as much as my Assos Campianissimos that I still have. All things being equal (in my eyes - and ass)...

My brothers buddy is a pro rider. His team buys Assos bib shorts, cuts the pads out and has them sewn into the standard issue uniform bib shorts. They have to use the sponsors standard issue where it is visible, but uses Assos where it counts.
I really have to agree with the Alienator, who is regularly spot on. The Assos bib shorts and jerseys are absolutely amazing.
My sweet cheeks will never feel anything else. ;-)
Didnt know that there are so many assos bibshorts fans. Still my budget (or mind) dont allow to try them (i am riding just 5 to 8 hours a week), but I am looking for new bibshorts. Is there anything particular worth looking at (for half price of top assos)? What about those less expensive F1 UNO assos? And do assos users use that recomended creme?

For about $80, you might try Performance Ultra bibs. They use a swiss knit fabric for excellent sweat transport in the hot weather, with a stretchy italian foam pad that works great on all-day rides. I have a couple pair of their cheaper shorts and bibs which have a blue "corduroy" pad. They are OK, but the stretch foam pad is just easier on my cheeks for the century rides:)
Just like frames and saddles, would think a lot of it comes down to fit. If the bibs/shorts fit you well and stay put, that's at least half the battle.

Shorts.....egads man, why do you hate yourself so? I don't hate myself, I'm just from near Cincinnati where we are used to pain, i.e. the Bengals and Reds! Except for 1986 - 1988, I have always been a recereational rider. Except for a pair of of Specialized cycling shoes, 1997 vintage, I never even thought of buying any kind of bicycling specific clothing until about three years ago. It is OK but not really different than riding in a pair of hiking shorts, even on the centuries that I have participated in. I do like the jerseys though.

Quality on the UNOs is definitely a step down. I don't know how they function, though.
You might consider Descente Optimas, Louis Garneau bibs, Capoforma, Hincapie, Exte-Ondo (very good rep), or De Marchi. They all invariably rate well.
