Shimano web site says 10 speed only for this wheel, my question is can you use a spacer and a 9 speed cassette? Has anyone done this?

It is the other way around :)
A 10 speed only is exactly that.
You use the spacer on an 8/9 speed wheel when putting on a 10 speed cassette.
