Hi all,

Does anyone know what that hideous smell is that wofts over onto yarra boulevard sometimes? I'm just curious as it makes me want to throw up and I find it REALLY hard to hold my breath whilst riding! :)

Thanks

Bats, 1000's of them. So the smell of them, and all their droppings from their nestings.

I pity the people that have their 'million dollar houses' in that section of Melbourne only to be stunk out when the wind blows the wrong way. :D

Oh my. I really wish you had said its like a brewery smell or something. I'm going to have great visuals now!

Imagine laying down several million dollars. Sitting out on your super expensive verandah and being hit by the smell for the first time. That'd hurt!

HA! Bats? Really? :)

I also thought it was something coming up from one of the businesses down there.

It smells ok the first time 'round, although strong, then it gets worse and worse each lap :)

Just out of curiousity, how long does it take you to go from the entrance near amcor to the end? I actually start after that hill on the top - I come in via the narrow suspension bridge and up the windy hill.

^ never timed it. Actually, I don't think I could even give a rough time. :p

I think it's just under 7km???? So,....well....nah, I dunno :)

I don't go there much coz I'm in the south east, only 8km from Beach Rd, plus the surface is horrible -- at least it was the last time I was there.

Well its either the bats (if you are talking about the part near the golf course) or its the brewery up near... well the brewery.

I never found the brewery smell that bad, strong but not bad.

how long does it take you to go from the entrance near amcor to the end?hmmm, I just remembered they have heaps of time-trials around there, both pro and amateur, so it wouldn't be too hard to figure out average speeds.

Jono should know :D

Brief memory is that in an 11k tt round there i ave'd a tick under 41 whereas in the suntour TT that was a bit lengthier with another turnaround Ben Day av'ed more like 43 (??)

then I guess that's about 10 mins for one 6.8km run-through, at 41kph ave, for good riders.

Go to 'results' then click on the Kew Boulevard TT results to get an idea of the times some people do.

The timing is from the yellow line near walmer street to the roundabout at the first freeway crossing and back. Some of the times are for two of those loops;)

Thanks :) I'm not as bad as I thought! Though not yet at those times :)

How do I get involved in friendly (organised) competition in Melbourne anyway?

To race on the road or track http://www.vic.cycling.org.au/ and find a local club. You must have a licence to compete & these are arranged via the clubs.

Or http://www.atta.asn.au/ if you want to do time trials only. (look for the ATTA Victoria section for info.

Or http://www.mtba.asn.au/ if you want to race offroad on an MTB

and finally http://www.veterancycling.com.au/ is another road racing option (but for 35yrs +) Don't know if you fit this profile or not...

Hope this helps. :)
