cramps & magnesium
i've run 8 marathons, and 2 were horrible because i got cramps in my
upper calves. one was on a hot day, the other was in ideal conditions.
i follow a minimal training plan that usually results in 2 runs of
20-22 miles and a peak week of around 45 miles. i suspect that i might
be deficient in magnesium, possibly because i drink more beer than i
should. thoughts?

I would more suspicious of some dehydration and/or not enough salt. I
would look into sodium before magnesium. If you tend to drink plain
water and not a sports drink during your race then again possible low
salt. If you have a higher need for salt in general, then even a sport
drink like gatorpus will not provide enough salt especially in hot
weather.

I love my beer as much as anyone. If you're throwing down six pack the
night before your marathons, or simply drinking too much the days
before, then the alcohol in your system will lead to some dehydration
thus cramps. Try not drinking for the week before your marathon.
