All are one, in the eys of the car

View Full Version : All are one, in the eys of the car

I was ambling home from work today and was passed by a guy going pretty fast. Further on down the
road I could see him gesticulate at a car but I did not see the incident.

Further along i pull alongside a row of traffic to turn right at a roundabout, guy on the outside
lane leans out his window and says "your mate there, he is insane". I was like ?!? what !?! then
twigged he must mean the other cyclist. so I say 'i don't know him' and carried on my merry way.

Got me thinking though, the arm waving and the guy talking to me were separated by maybe 5 minutes I
was not in view of whatever incident happened, but still they guy in the car says "your mate" and
expected some response from me.

Indicative of the way one cyclists behavior reflects on others, and the view of most people that all
cyclists are really one person (or something)

Thats because we are all tarred with the same brush.

Seems to be reciprocal to me. Most of the posts here view motorists as a single group with uniformly
homicidal behaviour towards cyclists.

In reality, extensive research (Such as the Scottish Office report 'Drivers and cyclists as equal
road users') shows that

1) Drivers DO group all cyclist's together.

2) The beheviour of a minority of irresponsible cyclists strongly biases the attitudes of drivers to
all cyclists. In fact the more responsible and law abiding you are the less likely you are to
register on the consciousness of the average driver. (Similarly, who ever takes notice of well
behaved football fans...).

3) Cyclists generally DO attribute the most blatently irresponsible and inconsiderate behaviour of
car drivers to a minority.

However, as to whether or not the majority of drivers have homicidal tendancies towards cyclists,
whilst only a minority are deliberately aggressive, most drivers do frequently take small liberties
with the safety of others. For example, the majority of drivers habitually speed, almost 80% of
drivers will force their way past a cyclist just before or at a pinch point and so on...

Delete 'towards cyclists' and this is almost exactly what my driving instructor told me in 1970
(ish). Assuming every other road user is a homicidal idiot out to get me may be paranoid but it
encourages one to keep your wits about you while riding/driving.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you ;-)
