...I have seen mention of people who say they wouldn't buy a bike sight unseen, or that they weren't fitted to. Is it really that big a deal? Most of the sellers seem to be reasonably honest, so I'm less worried about getting something in inferior condition than I am about...well, I don't know what.

I basically am just trolling for opinions/horror stories/testimonials if anyone has bought a bike on eBay (or a similar site), or knows someone who did and would like to put forth their two cents.

You can get a rough idea via photos, but siiend person is a much better indication of a bike. Buying a bike your not fitted to is a problem and can lead to an uncomfortable riding experience. If you know what size bike your after you can get around this to some extent

I have purchased a few bikes through e-bay. I know what I want and do my own building or maintenance so I am not too worried. I do spend money at the LBS whenever possible but I can't afford new bikes. When I do purchase a bike over $3,000 or so I will go to the shop.
