Thanks for the cadence tip Bulldog and DKH2. I stuck with 53/17 and upted the cadence to the mid nineties. I just managed a christmas day 3 x 20: power output 312w, 304w and 301w av hrt 168bpm :D
Good work! How much do you weigh? I know of pros whose mid winter FTP is lower than that!
I will be doing 3 x 30 in 53/17 at 90+ cadence this afternoon....if I can....the KK computer has now completely stopped working so I need to rely on gearing and cadence to have an idea of how hard i am going....the KK computer is of similar quality to things that come out of christmas crackers ;-)

Mine has worked perfectly since then... Hey Bulldog, or anyone else for that matter, do you think upping the cadence @ FT increases cardiac output and hence buys you a little bit of VO2max improvement?

not really sure - I would guess so - I def notice that higher cadence at FT = higher HR and faster breathing and less leg stress.
A real advantage is that if you get useds to riding / racing at a higher cadence you will find you have less ache and fatigue in your legs the day after a big effort. You will also develop faster acceloration, which can be great for crits, for example.
