Anyone ride a Schwinn? What about the Schwinn LeTour or Schwinn Circuit as an entry level bike for fitness riding, getting into shape, losing weight and commuting to work, rides less than 30 miles long? Thanks, I'm trying to find either a flat bar road bike or drop bar with a budget of $600.

Hey...I don't know a lot about bikes but about a year ago I wanted to try out a chromoly-framed bike. In early Spring 2007 I got a mid-80's Schwinn Traveler that I really like (through ebay). It has a chromoly frame and 27-inch alloy rims (It weighs approx 28 lbs). I paid $100 (plus $50 shipping) and (after replacing the back tire, and doing some initial assembly and adjustments) got 20-30 nice rides (15-18 miles each) on it during the summer (of 2007). It seems to fit me perfectly and I think it is a bit more forgiving on my body than my aluminum-frame Windsor Stratford (flatbar). I parked the Traveler when I started hearing some popping noises from the back wheel, but I hope to get it repaired and back on the road soon. You may not be considering a steel-frame (or chromoly) Schwinn that is 20 years old (I don't know much about the LeTour or Circuit models, they may have a more recent history than my Traveler) but I encourage you to try some older Schwinns out if you can. I had never seen an original "old-school" Schwinn (except being given away on the "Price Is Right" on TV) until I got this one off of ebay.

It looks like their range of sizes is rather limited, but if you can get a good fit and a decent discount from the MSRP, either should work quite well. I'd recommend the Circuit, but I'm prejudiced towards sporty bikes.

If you can, do some comparison shopping with Giant, Trek, Felt, and whatever else is in this price range in your area.

I have an '80s Schwinn. At that point they were ubiquitous taiwanese tenspeeds. You can easily get parts for them, though I understand the Chicago Schwinns are pretty interchangeable with other tenspeeds too.

I too would like very much to hear about the durability of Sora/2200 components on a new lower end bike. Is it worth getting?
