Help: Cold Weather Motivation
I need some help. I need some motivation. My motivation has been weaning with this year's cold
temperatures. I just can not seem to get motivated to run when it is below teens or below with a
10-15 mph wind. It seems like it has been that way for months here in Ohio. Grant it we may have had
a few days in the 20s but only a few. Mix it with this is the snowy county roads and having to keep
our 300' drive shovelled (a.k.a. winter cross training) because of our approaching baby arrival, it
has been hard to put one foot in front of the other and hit the road. What are others doing to stay
motivated this year?

I'm not afraid to run in the cold, I just don't like it. I have plenty of cold weather runner gear.
I am less motivated because it seems like it has been really cold really long this year. I would
rather run outside any day than run on a t-mill.

now understand the frustrations that you're talking about. While I don't mind the cold; few weeks
ago ran in -10 weather, it's the wind which causes me to whimp out. Today the wind up to 40 knots,
so I'm off to the gym for some easy threadmill work...I love being a whimp on days like this. How's
Momma doing ?

I missed the most obvious motiviation: once the baby comes you will have a lot less time and energy
to run, even if the weather is great. That would be, as my old moral philosophy prof called it, a
"negative virtue", but if you want to maintain much fitness you will want to pile up some mileage
now while you can--uncomfortable though it is.

I've been forcing myself for what seems like months, it is just getting old. I have all the gear and
winter clothing. I'm close to the breaking point and now we are getting 9-12" of snow in the next 12
hours with blowing and drifting snow. I guess I'm going to have to do some more shovelling!

Good one, never really thought about that much. Thanks

Break the routine and go xc skiing or snowshoe running.

Last winter after I ran on snow or ice of some sort from October to March or April, I decided that
under the same circumstances this year I would xc ski on the weekends when we had decent snow - for
the variety, but also to fit in better with the weather. I can xc ski for a longer time than
running so it gives me a chance to get out and play more, hence more prolonged cardio. Alas, no
snow this year.

Many people in Alaska would *almost* give an arm and a leg for 9-12 inches of snow. (actually
*giving* the arm and leg might require some retraining) We've had so many events cancelled now (both
lack of snow and extremely warm weather - open rivers and lakes - until a couple days ago), that
it's more like they announce *if* an event is going to happen
:( While our temperatures are returning to normal, there's still no
snow in the forecast.

I heard they are going to reroute the Iditarod this year?? I grew up in Wasilla, and know that this
would be devistating to the businesses and people around there! Is it really that bad (or good,
depending how you look at it) of a winter??

Hey Cam!

I had been planning for a race that's in the beginning of April. Seeming so far off, my motivation
was getting down. Thanks for the reminder of St Patrick's day. It's really only a few weeks away.
And the Temps today are supposed to get above freezing. Well slush or not, I'm going out for my run.

Thanks!
