How good or bad is Yogurt for health ?

I am supposed to be on a diet for high cholesterol and possibly diabetes ... so I am substituting
bad foods for good.

Can anyone please help me with a palatable diet.

Which fat/oil is best for a person like me ?.

Any input on Yogurt ? Good or bad ? How about Buttermilk ?

if possible Pls. copy me on any input you may have : lucyh@usa.com

Non fat yogurt is a wonderful food. Non or low fat buttermilk, ditto. How the carb count impacts
those with diabetes, I don't know. You should consult a dietician specializing in how to eat best
for those at risk for diabetes.

I agree with Rita...although one more thing I'd like to mention...plain yogurt....anything flavored
almost always has added sugar! So take plain, low fat yogurt and add the fruit/flavor
yourself...thus avoiding HFCS and other simple sugars..,..

Lucy,

Yogurt is good - but you want "lite" yogurt (no added sweetener). Olive oil is great for cooking and
dipping bread in. Avoid sugar, added sweeteners, white flour and other refined grain products. These
dietary items have been proven to reduce your risk of diabetes and heart disease:
1. Low Gylcemic load diet
2. High fiber diet
3. Low Trans-fatty acids
4. low saturated fat diet (found in meats)
5. moderate alcohol consumption

Also, of course you want to exercise and take

For info on how to do this go to Harvard's site

Hiya Rita,

I haven't got diabetes but the question about yoghurt was a question I was just going to ask and
then I saw it already here.

Are there any web sites for such.

Also the same question for cottage cheese.

Recipe sites would be good also.

Thanks in advance. jacmac

Butter is only about 80% fat by weight, so a tablespoon of olive oil has more fat, but that wasn't
my point. People typically butter bread on only one side, and it typically does not saturate the
bread to any great degree unless the butter is at room temperature and the bread is hot. By
contrast, a piece of bread dipped in olive oil will have oil on both sides, and there will likely be
significant saturation.

Yes, you have a point - it's easier to overeat olive oil than butter. It would be prudent to measure
out a tablespoon of olive oil rather than to dip the bread. Before I tried to lose weight I'd often
eat an ounce or more of olive oil with bread while eating out. There's nothing like italian bread
soaked with extra virgin olive oil! Yum! Now, I don't eat bread at all. Instead I eat "Ry Krisp"
(whole grain rye crackers) and sometimes I spread hummus (olive oil + chick peas) over it. Back to
topic - lite yogurt has one of the lowest GI indexes and is very nutritious. Skim milk may be
cheaper but I don't care for the taste.
