Clicking noise when pedalling

Turkey Tickler

Hi there I wonder if anyone can help me here...

Im getting a weird clicking noise when im peddling. It seems to be around the same point of rotation
of the crank each time. Sounds almost like the cable tie that holds the magnet onto the crank is
flicking against the cadence sensor but its not because ive checked.

I reckon its either the pedals, cleats or bb and the crank looks fine and is bolten in tightly.

Any suggestions as to possible causes? its driving me nuts!.

Cheers

Chris

It might be the chainwheel hitting the front derailer mech.

When I had the same thing as you describe it turned out to be the bearings in the pedal. Try
swapping pedals from a different bike and see if it's still clicking. If so then it's likely the
bearings in the bottom bracket.

Do you feel any unevenness in the pedal at the same time as the click? If you turn each pedal on its
own axle, slowly, by hand, how does it feel? Can you move either crank laterally at all?

My instinct is 'knackered pedal bearings', but you'd feel them as well as hear them.

Four suggestions all of which have produced that effect for me:

Is the BB tight? Grease the pedal threads where they screw onto the cranks and do them up tight Are
the pedal bearings OK Grease the seatpost in the seat tube and check the saddle is on tight.

The last seems strange but the movement of pedalling can make the seat post click if not greased -
try pedalling standing to eliminate it as a cause.

Check out the end of the front gear cable after it has passed through the front mech. retaining
bolt. Is it touching the crank as it rotates ?

Hi, I had the type of problem described a while back and it turned to be a pedal which was slightly
loose on the crank, hope this may help!

Thanks John

This might sound a bit daft but if you've failed to find any other source have a look at your shoe
laces! I had some strange clicking, again pretty much at the same point each rotation. It turned out
that at the point wherea crank arm was facing forward and parallel to the ground (and so running
along level with the inside of the foot) the plastic tabs on the end of my shoe lace would strike
the crank arm.

I was amazed at just how audible this was but large tubed aluminium frames (like mine) seem to make
even the most gentle tap or click sound loud.

Now, before riding, I always tuck the ends of my laces into my shoes.

Kind Regars, Paul

It's my knee and it's driving me nuts as well, but I'm suprised that you can hear it!

Have you checked to make sure there isn't a steering wheel down the front of your pants?

Its metal parts on your bike frame picking up and rectifying the signal from those new digital
police radios; the CID are on to you and you should find some place else to "peddle" your wares :)

Seriously though this happened to me about a year ago. Checked the pedals (as others say this is the
first thing to check) , these were in order and it turned out to be wear on the bottom bracket. Is
it the old or new style?

!

Now that's one that would _not_ have occurred to me. I've never greased a seatpost, thinking I don't
want to lubricate that, it might slip. Is it a Good Thing To Do[tm]?

The other "silly" problem, which I have experienced, is if you have a stand that has got knocked out
of alignment, it can just catch the pedals as they go round.

Which reminds me of another source of clicking - the end of the front derailleur wire sticking out
and catching on your shoe each revolution

Do it now.

It will prevent water getting into your frame and it will stop the seatpost getting stuck in
the frame.

The most UNlikely thing is the thing that caused my clicking in time to the cadence. I wear a top
with a full length zip. The bottom of the zip was clicking against the front of the saddle as my
legs moved. I found this out AFTER dismantling pedals, BB etc.

Thanks to everyone who responded....

Turned out the pedal threads needed greasing in the end DOH!

Thanks to Freewheel in Norwich - who sorted it for me there and then without charge- and I didnt
even buy the bike from them....
