An interview with Lance on a plane. Hope this is not old hat, but I was only sent it this morning. Tyson

Daniel Coyle's book "Lance Armstrong's Wars" cover this in detail. Its really interesting how mathematical it is.

Oh, here we go. The ole 'Lance doped' chestnut. Can't we drop it now? He's retired with an officially clean record. Others of his era were proven to have doped and got caught. He never did. Now, he either was far more clever than others or he was clean. Can't we just believe that a guy who was a pro triathlete at 16, world road champ at 21 and had the strength of will to overcome a severe form of cancer just maybe had the magical combination of physical ability, the will to succeed and the guts to keep going when others stopped?

I reckon everyone with a power meter should ride at 6.5-6.8W/kg and see how long they last, and post duration here just for a laugh :)

Alex, you believe Armstrong coud 480 wattas for one hour???http://cyclingforums.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Explain why, pleasehttp://cyclingforums.com/images/smilies/cool.gifActually I may be overcooking it at >6.5W/kg. Depends on how long the climb took I suppose.

But let's say he is a world class aerobic cyclist (a fair assumption) and capable of riding at 6.25W/kg for an hour (the top known FTP is 6.4 W/kg IIRC). And race weight around 72-73 kg.

so 6.25W/kg x 72kg = 450W

so perhaps Lance is better than 6.25 W/kg or the climb referred to was much less than one hour enabling a average higher power output.

So 480W is both believeable and unbelievable at the same time.

I also note that in one study by Coyle in 2003 that quotes Armstrong as being tested at nearly 7W/kg for 20 minutes. Not sure if that's been reported accurately though.

I think you hit the nail on the head. He or shall i say his team were far more clever and professional than other teams in more ways than one. Possibly a reason why so many ex USPS riders got caught after they left.

Armstrong was a great athlete no question. Results done on a lot of pro athletes can't be relied upon because of the whole doping issue.

The 480 W value is all the more believable when you recognize that Coyle lacked accurate body mass data for the critical period (i.e., when Armstrong was winning his 7 Tours), and Armstrong himself has stated that he raced the Tour at ~74 kg.

There seems to be this belief among people that "juicing" will somehow turn you into superman. I am sorry but I know plenty of guys who juiced in the gym and could not get any bigger or push anymore weight than guys who did not juice.

If Lance juiced or not to me does not take away from the fact that he was already gifted and had the drive to win.

The juice just got him to win too many tours....to be believable. Just like these over 40 year old athletes who are still playing pro sports like baseball and football and claming it is all natural....please.

450W media per one hour very plausible…if count his racing weigt - 70-71kg.

Proof? we can do apply law of gravitazion in his realistic climbing in real racing.

I think 480W media per 20 min is true. Not one hour.

And I suspect Rudolf's red nose was caused by heating from air friction.
