Helmets
View Full Version : Helmets
Well, doubtless this subject has been done-to-death here, and as a relative newbie I wouldn't dare
to rake up old stuff, but I have come to a decision.
I have decided not to wear a helmet anymore, when riding around rural Norfolk. Today I had two
further incidents with buzzing insects entering the ventilation slots. Unfortunately, you never know
whether the offending bug is the stinging kind or not, so I for one always give them the benefit of
the doubt and act with considerable immediacy.
So - my argument goes like this:-
Number of times wearing a helmet has saved my life in an accident during the last 500 miles
ridden - 0.
Number of times a buzzing insect has gone inside the vent slots in my helmet in the last 500 miles,
causing me to panic, stop the bike uncontrollably and yank the thing off my head - at considerable
risk to others around me - 6
Ergo, wearing my helmet on quiet rural roads in summer is more dangerous than not wearing one. Exit
the helmet, enter the Buff...

Your experience matches thhat of the most recent and valid studies. Nice to see some people have
brains; I wonder what the others think they are protecting?

Alternative, as used by a friend of mine - requires Copydex adhesive and some net curtain offcuts.
Glue net over the vent holes in the helmet to stop the blighters entering. The net still allows air
through for ventilation.
However, I agree with your conclusion and also ride without a helmet on East Anglian roads.

Unless you are prone to anphalactic shock this is an over-reaction. By your own admission you panic
and become a risk to others. Helmet or not, bicycle or motor vehicle, people like you cause
accidents.
Grow up or stay off public roads.

Yes, you are probably right - I wish I were perfect too; but sadly I'm only human.

Someone makes a choice, has valid and personal reasons for that choice and you call him an idiot.
Methinks you need to look at yourself ..

I can't believe the hostile and childish remarks that some people are making in reply to this
thread. Its his decision whether or not to wear a helmet - for whatever reasons.
Give the guy a break and stop making smart-**** comments.

My wife was stung by a wsp while driving one day - nearly piled up the car. Should she stop driving?
Should we all stop using any form of vehicle until we are able to withstand the fear or actuality of
insect stings without flinching? That would certainly reduce the number of cars on the roads.

Oh how I'd like to see your reaction if a large wasp went up the leg of your shorts.
Shall we test your reaction?

Quite. You'll find the rules on wearing helmets on tracks on the British Cycling site. You have to
use fixed wheel as well ;-)

Any wasp that can get past the leg grippers of my shorts would indeed reduce me to a
quivering wreck ;-)

My gawd, don't let Gruppenfuher Schmidt of Cameras R Us (Not) read this. You'll prove his point that
accidents have nothing to do with speed and all to do with wasps :-)
I have been on a ride since my reply to the OP and despite my back tyre blowing out and then finding
my spare tube had chafed through in the seat pack I'm feeling a whole lot more mellow. What a
glorious day!

Once topposters arrive in a thread there is no way of sensibly snipping.
