Landis' last gasp
I'll take a stab at this. Here it goes.
THE BEGINNING?
I'd load up with everything. I like to think I could do a better job if I were caught. :p

And would you go straight for the break-down-and-ask-for-God's-forgiveness confession... if you did get caught... or would you have plans A, B, C, D and E in the ready... :D

Disagree with your view on that.Deep down, Americans hate successful people. We love it when rich, famous or otherwise successful and ambitious individuals fall from grace.
;) Deep down, Americans hate successful people. We love it when rich, famous or otherwise successful and ambitious individuals fall from grace.
I don't know...it depends on why they're famous. I think it's a particular situation when it's a famous athlete like Clemens or McGwire...they are admired and looked up to and it's a thrill to see, and then people feel foolish when it turns out the guy was a cheat. But, conversely, there is the smug satisfaction that they really weren't that great after all, and we can feel better about our own mediocrity.
When it comes to other moral situations, however, Cranky's already touched on the fact that people feel relieved and better about themselves, that they are better than the "other guy" who failed.
I remember Bill Maher talking about Mick Jagger once, saying everyone criticized him for all his affairs with models, etc...and said people were hypocrites because Jagger wasn't less moral than those people (men) he just had options....;)

Yea, nothing like watching someone else's life blow up to make you realize yours ain't so bad....It is impossible to take out the socio-economic envy present in worldly wealth.
Not only do we Americans like to see successful people fall, but the rest of the would likes to see wealthy Americans fall too.(ok, big generalization, and I am not being xenophobic, just making a general un-documented observation) Maybe we could find sponsors for the whole thing, get book makers involved to set odds, and make a fortune off of it....then later down the road, when we are enjoying our money in a flamboyant nouveau riche way, those who made us rich will stop placing bets, and watch us fall.

America has a lot more respect for successful people and success generally than does Australia and the UK IMO. They call it "tall poppy syndrome" there. Build them up... then chop 'em down. It's almost a subject taught in college for wannabe tabloid journalists.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will publish its decision on Floyd Landis' appeal on Monday, June 30 at 7 am EST.
CAS held a closed-door hearing in New York in April.
Landis hopes the CAS appeal board — David Williams of New Zealand, Paris attorney Jan Paulsson and New York lawyer David Rivkin — will overturn the ruling against him by a US arbitration panel last September.
Landis was stripped of the 2006 Tour de France title after standing atop the podium following the final stage, undone when he tested positive for synthetic testosterone after the 17th stage of the race.
The American had fallen back in stage 16 but rallied in stage 17 to reclaim almost eight minutes on his way to a the victory.
Landis denied any wrongdoing and appealed to the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) in an open hearing last May. But the USADA panel ruled 2-1 against him, resulting in a two-year ban through January 29, 2009.
The International Cycling Union stripped Landis of his 2006 crown after that verdict, awarding the title to Spain's Oscar Pereiro.
Landis presented the case anew to the global panel, again attacking the credibility of the French laboratory which handled his doping samples.
The USADA arbitration panel acknowledged several areas in which the French lab's handling of the test sample was improper but said the carbon ratio isotope test that showed Landis testing positive outweighed those issues.

Here we are again, right before the Tour. 365 days a year, and they never seem to be able to stay away from July when it comes to submitting their decisions. It almost seems as though it's on purpose. Kinda like the Britney Spears PR strategy . . .
It would not get any media coverage in December, but as far as Lanids and his career it doesn't really matter about the timing at this point.

Yeah, I get all that. I just meant more the timing from the aspect of bringing the black cloud to the forefront of people's minds AGAIN right before the Tour starts . . . two years later, here we go again. So, right before the Tour starts, everyone is busy harping on the doping and all the negativity, etc.

I ran that problem over on DP with her.
She must be a witch.

I wonder if it is because it is one of the few times that much of the sporting world seems a little more focused on cycling due to the Tour and the story will get a little more air time.

Agreed. My only point is that, overall, I wonder whether such tactic actually helps or hurts the sport overall.

Are there any dudes in CAS who are influenced by UCI? UCI is the one organization that has a motive in damaging the Tour as much as they can.
PS: I think we need a separate thread for thunder and C to bicker at each other so that regular threads don't get hijacked.

Minor detour yes, but yet again, not provoked by me. ;) Minor detours occur all the time in threads around here. I'll gladly take on the task of pointing each and every one out as they occur if you'd like. :p
That said, I don't know the answer to your question. I get the point about the CAS decision being buried in other news if it doesn't come out around the time of the Tour. However, when analyzing the overall picture, having such a scenario might be better for the sport overall. So, maybe you are onto something. Maybe there is an underlying political motive to sabbotage.
