treatment: vitamin b shots/IV ??
My mother has been suffering from horrible abdominal pains, diarrhea (bloody & mucous-filled) for
nearly 5 weeks. Two weeks ago she went to the doctor & he prescribed her antibiotics (cipro) for 5
days. When she finished the 5days, she progressively got worse with horrible pain in what seems to
be her large intestine - right side - and even worse diarrhea than before. We took her back to the
doctor who then prescribed her cipro again plus another antibiotic (metronidazole) for 7 days. The
doctor said that the problem was that he didn't prescribe the antibiotics for a long enough time.
She is feeling a little bit better each day - stool has more formation & less blood, but we have a
bigger concern now. The doctor called today to tell her to stop taking the antibiotics and start
taking a drug called asacol. My mom suffered from ulcerative colitis 25 years ago and the doctor now
feels like it may be back. (No tests proved this to be the case.) Anyhow, 25 years ago my mother
tried every single medicine in the book - from all the 5-ASA drugs to prednisone and other
steroid&cortisone pills and enemas. None of these worked. The only thing that she found which
eventually cured her were vitamin injections - vitamin b-12 & others. This was 25 years ago, I was
just born and don't remember any of the events during this time, but I'm now desperately trying to
find more information on this type of vitamin treatment (what it would be called) and where I can
find a doctor (I REALLY want to go through an
MD) who can help us out here. (The doctor that she went to years ago in Berkeley/Albany, CA area has
since passed away.) Also, my mom has Kaiser and I haven't been able to find any information
there on this type of treatment.
Please, please any help here. Any associations, site, etc would be helpful. Thank you very much.
Kindest regards & God bless, Val

I did not know that asacol was around 25 years ago. Back then azulfadine (sulfasalazine) was the
major drug similar to asacol, and then it was called salacylazosulfapyridine. It sounds a lot
like Ulcerative Colitis which peaks in the third and sixth decades of life, but also good be a
virus, gastroenteritis, pseudomembranous colitis, abdominal abscess, ischemic colitis or
diverticulitis, infectious colitis, food poisoning, and appendicitis. Finally and less likely are
obstruction and cancer.
