O.K. so with my sore ham I've been lazy the last few days. But today was sunny and 75 and I just
had to get out and do some rehab. Normally I do this at night so as not to look too much like
a newbie cause I used to be a fast macho runner who never paid much attention to others runner
I might pass. But that was before tearing my ham and today's temptation to get a sunburn was
too great.
So I'm doing my first mile and my ham is sore and it was sore during the mile warm up to a trail I
haven't run in a while so I'm going kinda slow, intent on easing into good form instead of being
macho. And I'm going along making sure I land mid- foot with back straight and getting my knees a
bit higher and pushing my hips forward when all the sudden this shapely
to my left. Well I didn't think I was going *that* slow but her little feet were moving in very
short and fast strides while I was moving slow but taking bigger strides cause my legs are so
much longer.
"Mind yourself now," I said, resisting the temptation to speed up and show off like roosters are
prone to do. So I just kept minding my rehab form and watching the nice view (uh...very nice...) in
front as she swayed down the trail. After another half mile another runner of the opposite
persuasion passed me, and then yet another. I hadn't seen a macho male runner when that's all I
remember having seen on this trail and began to wonder why I'd never noticed all these women in
short shorts before with better forms than I. Then as the answer began to dawn on me the first
shapely runner had turned around and was coming back toward me. I kept my form and pace even though
my heart rate jumped a little and looked right at her as we got closer and closer. Finally she
passed me again and cracked a big smile and waved and I waved back realizing there might be some
advantages to being a slow turtle on this trail. I turned around and ran backwards (hey, it's part
of the PT's rehab, really...) and watched the view recede once again. Never ever got that sort of
smile being a macho man.
I can't wait til tomorrow. Rehab heaven :)
