I have twice posted "new" messages that have appeared on the wrong thread, sometimes ones that were
almost 3 years old. It appears to be due (my guess) to the fact that each thread had the same
subject line. Has anyone else had this problem? It has happened to me twice in the past month. How do
we prevent this frokm happening
Also, how is it that I have received replies via email to messages that I do not even see posted
yet. Why can others view these posts, literally hours before I do?
Moderation is for the birds. How much better are the boards where you're message appears instantly?
My answer is - MUCH better - and no I have not seeen any major issues with inappropriate postings -
if there are, the moderator THEN deals with it....
Jeff, this is NOT a moderated board, if that's the assumption you are making in your post below. If
this were moderated, we wouldn't have the trolling density we have.
Not that I'm an expert but here's my guess: the problem with your posts not appearing quickly is
almost certainly related to your own provider's servers or to an issue with using Google to read the
newsgroup. I assume the Google servers are not updated as quickly as straight up news servers. I can
often see messages via my Adelphia news server before they appear via Google.
Do you have the ability to set up a real news server and newsreading software through your Internet
provider? Good luck. chris

That is the way Google groups works. Threads are sorted by the subject name and then by the date.
Just move to the most recent post to see the "current" discussion under that subject name.

Keep in mind Google is also an archive. When you view messages on Google they have been archived,
hence the delay. Until the messages are archived they will not appear. This also has to do with you
see your posts as threads in older subjects. Google is an archive that allows for posting and follow
ups. Not the other way around.
I've found that Google updates rec.running around noonish local to NYC. I've noted that some groups
update more often than rec.running.

Rec.running has no moderator. If you like the other viewers then you should use what you prefer.

If the thread has the same subject line, then how is it wrong? But, yes, that does happen, esp. in
google where *all* the archived posts are. In my usual reader, I only see this when I was subscribed
when the same title was last used. I just look at the dates and read from the newer ones if that's
all I'm interested in. However, I have frequently found useful information in things that date back
to 1997, etc. And the "thread" may have been reincarnated several times over the years.
If this is a problem, then the solution would be to use a not-frequently used subject line - perhaps
just including a little bit more info, enough to separate it from a question that has been
previously asked and presumably why you are asking it now - like perhaps to get newer information.
Also, in google when a subthread changes the subject line, it starts a new thread, sometimes making
it difficult to find the original info (if the title didn't change right when the topic changed)
unless you also search on that thread (or maybe there's another way of setting google up). In
Netscape, it stays threaded with the others, but it does stand out that there's a change in topic.
Not sure about other readers.

I've posted via google on occasion, and their note says it takes up to 9 hrs for a post to appear in
google (probably the next cycle), iirc. I use google at work, and most things I read at home in the
morning with netscape have not appeared on google until I'm about ready to leave at end of day. I
can't remember if I've posted via google then read with netscape to see whether google posts
promptly so others can see it, but I know I can't see it via google. But aside from google, servers
*do* respond at different rates - both sending and receiving. There's been cases where somebody
posted, then the post didn't appear here for a couple days. And posts from various people definitely
show up at different times relative to when they posted. It's usenet.

As Chris said, this board is not moderated. Moderated boards may have delays up to 3 days that I've
seen (no posts appeared at all - apparently the moderator was out of town or something). (I have
since found the unmoderated equivalent topic board, and it is much more active.)
I think the issues you are seeing (threading, timing) are all related to google. I'd use something
besides google for everyday reading if these issues concern you. I use a newsreader rather than
google since it's faster, and just use google for searches or when not on with my isp. At various
times, there's been discussions in this ng on various free newsreaders that people use.
YMMV.
