Race Report: Victory over Violence 5K, Fort Worth, Texas, USA

Brian Baresch

Beautiful sunny mild day. Race course through a park and the Botanic Gardens. Lotsa food afterward.
And I finally got under 22:00!

I wanted to get into the 21's, but I started too fast. My first mile was 6:39, and that's including
a small hill. Growf! I managed to hold on, somewhat; my next splits were 7:07 and 7:11. We ran
through Trinity Park, starting south of 7th Street and winding around some, then crossing University
for a quick tour of the Botanic Garden, then back to the park. The course wasn't at all straight --
lots of opportunities for tangents -- but it was mostly flat and attractive, passing near the river
in mile 3.

I turned the corner at the 3 mile mark and decided to cruise in, but a couple of people came up from
behind me and I wondered whether I could outkick them. I could! Finishing time (watch) was 21:36.

They had more than 2,000 runners and raised a buncha money for fighting domestic abuse. The district
attorney's office had nearly 200 runners on its team.

Post-race food included Powerade, smoothies (Jamba Juice -- yum), donuts, bananas, oranges, coffee
and iced tea, and muffins and so forth; one restaurant, Fresh Choice, brought brownies and chicken
sesame salad. No beer that I saw.

Course control was excellent. My only complaint is that they didn't have people reading splits at
the mile markers, which themselves were not hard to miss. Otherwise, excellent organization.

Four stars. Brian Bob says check it out.

Great job Brian.

I doubt if I'll ever make it back down to Texas again, so I'll have to pass on seeing the river
at mile 3.

If this were a virtual race, you beat me by 2 seconds and I'm sure I would have had a virtual photo
of you crossing the finish line right in front of
me. Oh BTW, my photo would probably show you forgot to carry your camera again. ;-)

Thanks, Roger

Brian you are a wonder, doing all these races. Turning out another good job I see. Good one!

Thanks, Roger! A couple of years ago I was following your progress on the newsgroup and wondered
whether I'd ever get in shape to catch up to you. I guess I did! ('course you took some time off so
it probably doesn't count.) My next goal is to catch a woman I know slightly who's running in the
low 19's. If I can lose another 20 pounds I can probably do it.

That dang camera, never do remember it ...

If you want to lose 20 pounds, I wouldn't go near Hardies fast food. I don't know why they didn't
just change the name of their new burgers to "Fat" instead of "Thick." ;-)

I know a guy who says he has three rules for a good life: Don't get involved in family arguments,
don't play pinball/video games, don't eat at Hardee's. Works for me!

We have different groups that run from Hardies, most of them in the mornings, when there is still
something that can be eaten. ;-)

I plan on running a 4 miler tomorrow. I just checked my times. 2001 was
30:16 and 2002 was 27:32. I would hope I can break last year's time, but I'll find out tomorrow.

Whee, congrats! You speed demon you. Sounds like a great race. I would've loved to be there - the
post race munch goodies sound especially enticing :)

Thanks for the report,

And I'd've loved to see you here! You could have had a brownie on my behalf (I was on a business
trip and put on about 4 pounds last week -- now I'm really watching it for a while). It was a great
start to the day.

Thanks, Nina!

Yeah right, and give me the brownies - I've put on more than 4 pounds that I'm working on
getting rid of :)

Good thing I'm very far away. Brownies are evil.

cheers, nina

Ooh, congrats Brian! That's a great time, I'm jealous! ;-) And good time up the hill too! Sounds
like everything really came together for this race!

Thanks, Teresa! Actually I put my time into one of those pace calculators, and it said my expected
10K is actually a bit slower than the one I ran a few weeks ago, so I may have lost a step in the
past couple of weeks. We'll see! Half mara this weekend!
