I've started doing a new machine at the gym - a stairmill. Basically kicks steps out and its as
though you're climbing them. I love it. Kicks my *ss every time, but in a good way. I run about
12-15 miles a week and have really started noticing how tight my hamstrings are when I run - due to
the stairmill, I assume. Am I hurting myself? Will this help my running?

I'm terribly slow anyway, run more just to keep weight off and stay in reasonably good shape. Had
previously done stairmaster and elliptical at the gym. Curious if anyone else uses a similar machine
and how its affected their running. Thanks so much! Hope you all are having the same glorious
weather we've got here in VA today - about time...

You'll get used to it, those things are always tough for the first week or two.

Probably not hurtinmg, and it should help in time.

I use the eliptical, and it's marrrrrrrrrvelous baby! I love it! No other machine challenges me like
that one, did. (I'm used to it now) It's affected my running cadio-wise in a very positive way. My
running is so easy now it seems like cheating. I think it not only helped my heart but seemed to
have helped me breathe more steady too. Muscle wise I get much less stiffness, soreness, and fatigue
than before.

Dear user,

The elliptical machine is a godsend for those of us with old tired knees. Any stair climbing whether
by machine or by real stairs is bad for the knees. I would avoid them. My physical therapist thinks
those machines should be outlawed. Look at your knees as a diminishing resource. Once they are shot
you can't get them back.

One thing Bob, I'll take issue with your idea that running or climbing stairs damages the knees
until they give out. Perhaps stair steppers do, but walking up stairs doesn't, nor does running with
the proper equipment and style. If this is true in some peoples caeses it's because of some defect.
Millions of people run into their 80's and never have knee trouble.

Surely you exaggerate. Millions of people may live into their 80's but a only miniscule number of
them run. And there are many much younger people who have run with proper equipment and style but
have knees that have given out do to overuse.

I do agree with your comment about walking up stairs, I had in mind running up stairs.
