Name: Easter Seal Children's Therapy Center Distance: 4 miles Location: Clinton, Iowa Date April 13,
2003 8am Food: Chili pop bananas and free beer at a party after the awards. Goal: Beat last year's
time Finish time 28:37 Over a minute slower than last year. Trophy: 3rd in 45-49 by 6 seconds.
Females ahead of me: Two, one right in front. Shoes: 5 oz flats. Big Mistake: Track yesterday

Before heading up to the race, I was really thinking of just forgetting about this one. Glad
I went now.

I fell apart, I ran too fast on the first mile. I could tell by my breathing I was going to have
trouble after that.

I could have sworn that the first place female was ahead of me right from the start. It surprised me
to see her pass me shortly after the 2 mile marker.

The second place female passed me shortly after the 3 mile marker and I finished right behind her.

At the awards, I was getting ready to follow someone out the door to congratulate him and then my
name was called. Heck, after placing 9th in my AG a week ago, I didn't think I'd ever get another
trophy. I found out later that the person that finished right behind me, by 6 seconds, was in my
age group!

Probably the best part of this race was, my sister showed up for this race, then afterwards, at a
second location, helped me celebrate my 3rd place trophy with some friends and free beer.

Splits 6:49, 6:51, 7:32, 7:22

Thanks for reading and happy running, Roger

Nice result anyway, Roger. Seems tough to get the pacing right for these shorter races (shorter than
15Ks, anyhow). Good job placing in your AG!

Wow! nice going Roger. It's not that you were slower than last year, but in any given race there are
faster and slower runners. That day in that place you did great. Enjoy the trophy!

Whoo hoo! Way to go Roger! Ok, so the one minute slower wasn't a happy thing, but you still did
pretty well overall. :)

Congrats, Roger! It's always fun to get an award when you're not expecting it. Thanks for
the report!

Thanks Brian, Ed, Victoria, Teresa and nina.

I will have another 4 mile race this Saturday. I have never done it before so I don't know what to
expect, but I'm hoping I can do better if I don't do 50 minutes of wind sprints the day before.

Today I had some good news and some bad news. The good news is I set a record time on my Tuesday
morning hill. I did it in 34.42 seconds, followed by 3:42 of easy running then a 38.98 second hill.
I normally take about 6 minutes between attempts and then do better the second time.

At track today, I was worn out so I didn't run very much. I saw someone doing 800 meter repeats and
decided I'd try to hang with him. On the second 800, to my surprise we did it in 2:55.

Now the bad news. Before we started running track, I saw someone jumping up the stands on just one
leg. He went all the way up. Then after he did that, he did a bunch of heel raises, like he was
fresh. I tried the steps, on one leg, and could only do about 3 of them. Boy do I need help if I'm
going to go for a 1/4 mile uphill sprint in July.

I heard today that my picture was in the paper for Sunday's race. Since that was from a town about
40 minutes from here, I wonder if I'll ever see a copy of if.

Thanks, Roger
