I will be traveling to the Big Island soon and wanted to know if anyone knew of some good running
routes around Kona.

If you're staying in hotel in town, you can run the sidewalk along the main road that parallels the
ocean (Ali'i Drive?). Running past the start of the IMH is obligatory (just south of King Kam) ;)

BTW, after seeing the heat and wind during the day there, I had a whole new appreciation for IMH.
We generally headed south along Ali'i to be closer to ocean. It's actually a fairly interesting
run for being paved, and it gets out of the city atmosphere fairly quickly, although not rural, by
any means.
In February, we found it best to run in morning when it's cooler and before sidewalks get crowded
with tourists. Not sure how busy during day, but wall-to-wall people in the evening - literally hard
to walk. At sunup, it's mostly runners - totally different personality to the town then. The beaches
in the area (or at least heading south) are only about 100-200 m coves before they bump into lava or
coral outcrops, so beach running is not realistic, except for sprints - although north end of island
might be different, but might be private resorts.
If you have a vehicle to get out of town and are interested in trails, you could find some nice ones
in Volcano Natl Park, but it's a ways. Be aware that lava is sharp and will wear your shoes - as
well as knees if you wipe out. If you're interested in hills, there's Mauna Kea. For sure, you could
run a road from near sea level to its summit at over 13,000 ft (observatory on top). Saddle, perhaps
a better starting point, is around 7000ft, iirc. I know there's trails on the mountain, but don't
know anything about them (other that links below). I was on a business trip that included field
trips so the only place I actually ran was in town before meetings. But if I were going back there,
I would definitely do some homework on trails on that mountain - to run and/or hike. Fresh snow and
permafrost landscape features in Hawaii definitely intrigued this Alaskan.

I'm not sure if there's any trails easily accessible from town, but I did find references to some
trails. http://www.coffeetimes.com/kingstrail.htm
Enjoy!
