View Full Version : How to attract the big names to the T-Mob?
Were Vino, Gaby and the other top euros paid to ride the T-Mob? They didn't get any UCI points and
had to travel a fair bit. I heard Ullrich wanted $50K to appear. Maybe Telecom riders showed because
it's their sponsor's race, but what about the others? Saeco nudged by Cannondale? Postal by Trek
(and the fact that they're a US team?)

1. The Telekom team is changing its name next year to T-Mobile.
2. One of the two co-producers for the T-Mobile International (nee SFGP) is Tailwind Sports.
Tailwind Sports owns and manages -- the USPS team.

That explains Telecom and USPS, What is the motivation for SAECO, DOMINA VACANZE, and VINI
CALDIROLA? It's a long trip to from Italy to SF for a non-UCI race.

To check out the Worlds course in Hamilton on the way home?
OTOH, it could have been a 'vacation' race. If they brought family, then it probably was.

It *is* a UCI race. But I suspect the reasons why these other teams appeared could be because of
added encouragement.

Oh, I was reading the schedule wrong. I didn't see that the races were grouped by continent. That
makes more sense. http://www.uci.ch/english/road/calendar/calendar_2003/index.htm

How to attract the big names to the T-Mob?
Some the biggest names around were on the start list for the women. Bessette is out from a previous
crash, Jeanson was not there either or Bruncker but there were a lot of the top girls there. Throw
in a few of my favs from Europe and it couldn't get any better, IE - Brandli, Melchers, Ljungskog,
Rossner, Somarriba, etc.
Nicole Cooke (GBR) Katie Mactier (AUS) Judith Arndt (GER) Tina Mayolo-Pic (USA) Carmen D'Alusio
(USA) Diana Ziluite (LTU) Kristin Armstrong (USA) DeDe Demet Barry (USA) Dotsie Cowden (USA)
Mari Holden (USA) Amber Neben (USA) Lyne Bessette (Can) Manon Jutras (Can) Jessica Phillips
(USA) Ina Teutenberg (Ger) Laura Van Gilder (USA) Nicole Freedman (USA) Lynn Gaggioli (USA)
Andrea Ratkovik (USA)

IIRC, Saeco has been there all three years. Aqua & Sapone, now Domina Vacanze, where here last year.
Vini Caldirola, though no idea, other than Freddy Rodriquez is from across the bay in Emeryville,
though he's in the Vuelta and had a fine finish today, but not as fine as Zabel.

According to Cyclingnews, they announced that it'll be on the women's World Cup series next year,
so I imagine that a few of those women will be in SF next year. I thought it was a good race this
year. Nichole Cooke's attack up Taylor St. was impressive.

It's too bad that Freddy Rodriguez couldn't be there with the Vini Caldirola team - not to mention
Romans Vainsteins. Six were listed, but only four showed up - Stefano Garzelli, Dario Andriotto,
Steve Zampieri, and Uros Murn, a damned fine group by anyone's standards. At least three of those
finished, because I saw them, but I don't know if Garzelli did. I saw 62 and 64 in the peloton, and
Murn wore 63. Why were they here? Beats me, but I'm glad I got to see them. Freddy dragged the team
to the Tour de Georgia earlier this year, too, so these guys actually raced in America more than
Lance Armstrong did.
Domina Vacanze runs on Specialized bikes, as has been mentioned - they're headquartered in nearby
Morgan Hill. It was a trip to see those zebra jerseys.
Saeco? Who knows. They had more riders present than Vini Caldirola, but I think fewer of
them finished.

Did you see the finish? Rodriguez was "sprinting" with his hands on top of the bars. Weird. Zabel
was the only one out of the saddle to the finish and as things go he won.

Zabel indicated it was a slight uphill finish which suited him. He has done well after exhausting
climbing in the past.

Sure. And "after climbing" not only wrt the stage itself, but also the Pyrenees stages before that.

I've notice Rodriquez doing that before, almost like he is trying to stay "aero" while sprinting.

The race organizers (Threshold Sports) have managed to attract these teams for the Philly week as
well and seem to have developed a relationship with the teams. Unfortunately, the European riders
consider this more of a vacation than a race. Rumor has it that the Telekom rider who was in the
early break was out partying until 4am. Simoni lacked the tan lines that we would see in July. Looks
like he's been on the beach with Cipo.

Dumbass -
Perhaps some do, but look at the top 10.

On a course like that, you don't place highly unless you come to ride.

Aha - I figured out why I only saw 4 Vini Caldirola outfits. I thought Eddy Mazzoleni didn't show
up, but it looks like he was indeed there in the same colors as Garzelli, Andriotto and Zampieri,
and the other two, Massimiliano Mori and Uros Murn, were flying under different colors. That clears
it up... the Vini Caldirola team has been a disaster since the Giro, last in the team standings in
the TdF and now again in the Vuelta. They seem to have changed sponsors every week and now it seems
that it has fallen apart altogether.

Murn had the Pro Cycling Tour title riding on this race, by the way. He lost it to Horner.
