I'd be willing to bet that a 2.2 race in China provides better in
terms of travel expenses and accomodation than an equally ranked race
in the US would for a similarly ranked team.

And I seem to recall that what the TdQL doesn't provide in terms of
accomodation (it really is that bad and even worse for the event
staff) they make up for with appearance fees, as well as the nifty
factor from racing at 3000m above sea level on the Tibetan plateau.
