cassettes and chains, a marriage without divorce?

Since 2001, over 90,000 cyclist's have joined Cycling Forums to discuss topics from general cycling to equipment, training, racing and travel or vacation destinations (especially in europe during the tour de france). We also feature an great deals in our online store, 100's of articles, classifieds and product reviews.

I have two new 10 speed shimano cassettes and chains and change them
each time I need to use different cog sets (12-23 vs 12-27). However,
I'm having a lot of problems finding the new pins. Is it true that
these day cassettes and chains still have to be kept as one unit?

Why bother? First, if the chain is not worn, you
can swap cassettes without switching chains. As long
as the chain is long enough to wrap your larger cogs
(so you don't break anything if you accidentally go
to the big-big). After all, every time some rider
takes a spare wheel, they are swapping cassettes and
keeping the same chain.

Second, use the SRAM quicklink as Press said. It can
be used on a Shimano or SRAM chain and is clearly less
annoying than keeping a stock of those single-use pins.

DKT sells the KMC link - I recall the price being 5? for two. It works
fine, as does their chain, which may be under either DKT house brand or KMC
brand. Was 20? the last time I got one.

Meta-question I always wonder about is why you would change cassettes
with a 10v.

The 12-27 is hardly going to disadvantage you in any circumstance,

That is a good point, but since I absolutely never need the 27 for
about 10 months out of the year, I got the 12-23 so I could have a
true 10 speed for the rest of the time.

I run Campy 11-21 sets most of the time and for those days when crazy steep
climbing is in the cards, I got the paired 23-26 gear, an appropriate spacer, a lock
ring and the 13 that can be used on the outside of a cassette. This way I can do a
little gear shuffling and also have a 13-26 set. I like the consistent one tooth
spacing (which you do lose a bit of with the 13-26).

Shimano 10 is 12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,24,27,
right? (Not from personal experience, my
bike only goes to 9sp/12-27)

The 21-24-27 makes sense. If you're using them
for mountain bail out gears, you don't need them
as finely spaced as 21-23-25-27.

On the other hand, think of the massive weight
disadvantage of carrying around that 27 cog
when not needed.

I guess your driveway is nothing like mine. I'm also afraid my clown
car might torque stall. I have a 33x28 low on a double. You might
not be as fat as I am.

The KMC (or Wipperman connex) is better for ten speed than the SRAM
since the SRAM 10 speed is a semi permanent link that requires a
chaintool to take it off. I use SRAM chains with 10 speed links from
Connex and some other no-name Chinese brand (the chain was shit but the
link works well), mainly because I like to take the chain off when I
clean the drivetrain and the chain.

Thanks for the link. By the way, the crows at Vincennes are doing
well. It's amazing how they only come out when the guy who feeds them
is there and how they fly right to him. Apparently, Cynthia had a

That guy told me they're corneilles, not corbeaux, and they're
territorial enough that the ones on one side of the piste are
different from the ones on the other.

On the blog, I enjoyed his self-description:
