buying new bike
View Full Version : buying new bike
i would like to buy a new bike. currently i have a GIAN CADEX CFR already 12 years :D. it is carbon fiber and very comfortable. I am very use to the geometry the length the height the handle bar etc. now i do not know should i get a bike that the same geometry in fact this is what i want. i am not sure is the current geometry best setup?
Why on earth do you want a new bike?
Why on earth do you want a new bike? After 12 years it is very possible that the finish is not as good as it was, there are little nicks and scrapes in the paint, various parts are getting worn to the point of needing replacement, etc. You "know" you are faster on a spiffy new bike than one that looks and is 12 years old;). If he has the money and wants a new bike, let him buy a new bike!
The only problem with his question is that none of us can answer it without having him and the bike in question in front of us. Steve, I suggest that you find a good reputable bike shop and go talk to them. Get them to do a fitting and find out the geometry of a bike that will be most efficient for you, and then tweak it for comfort. You may find out that the bike that you have been riding is perfect and then get another bike exactly like it.
If money is an issue for you though, you might have your old frame refurbished by a frame builder and then put on all new components. It would feel like a new bike but it would have the geometry that you are comfortable with.

Actually, I take a certain pleasure pushing my '03 TCR (showing its age a little) past the local "new golf" executive set on their gleaming Colnagos, Pinarellos and Cervelos.
If a bike doesn't fit or isn't comfortable, certainly I'd take the first excuse to replace it. But given his satisfaction with the Cadex, why not just replace bits as they wear?
In any case, the deed is done.

In any case, the deed is done.+1. We both would rather show our fitness rather than bling it all up, but some people like to show what they can afford. I don't begrudge them for it because they probably worked hard to be able to pay for this and they are helping keep the bicycle manufacturers in business. But yeah, I do get a certain amount of pleasure passing a shiny new exotibike on my old Raleigh!
