Has anybody else had this embarrassing problem?

Took off the rear wheel for the first time from my used Mongoose. I
needed to pry up the tire so that I could straighten out the valve
stem, which has been angled in such a way that I can't inflate it.

Now no matter what the hell I do, I can't seem to find the right fit
for the rear wheel back into its seat. What have you done when
confronted with a situation like this?

My Urbanite frame is set to 132.5mm, so I have to struggle a bit to
get a 135mm wheel in place. That, as well as the fender and the rack
and the derailleur. Despite popping the straddle cable off the
cantilever brake, I usually put the tire on while half inflated.

You said it's a used bike, it's possible the previous owner jammed a
wider wheel in there than the frame happy with. A quick check with a
caliper and ruler could tell you the relative widths.

If that is the problem, either ten minutes with a 2x4 or $15 at the bike
shop should be able to coldset(widen) your frame (assuming it's steel).
