Bike vs skate

Here's a video of a sprint between a skater and a cyclist:

It is interesting because the cyclist uses his standard equipment from
the track. I recall about 15 years ago when Steve Hegg did this and
when he lost the first round, he put on a 39x17 and crushed the guy.
However, here the cyclist keeps his kilo gearing and disc wheel. I
guess it makes the race more interesting, because it would be no
contest otherwise. In other words, using a tiny gear (cyclist could
easily go 40kph in a 42x24) and a lightweight rear wheel, there would
be no problems accelerating. The only problem would be to find the
cog.

Flogging the old days...
Steve lost one (two?) but it was called a false start, and 4-5 false
starts later (critical because the skater was relying on his initial
burst) Hegg was able to nip Tony Muse at the Line. Heggs strategy was
apparently to use one gear. Never understood his one gear strategy or
the choice of a non sprinter like Hegg for this event. Guess the
Promoter liked Stars n Bars to be in the Worlds first Bike vs Blade
Race!!! The race was on the uphill Downers Grove National Crit finish
that is still in use today.

This shot was published in 3-4 magazines at the time. I ran out of
dupes and sent the original (in the old days there was this stuff called
film.....) to a New York magazine who lost it saying "the messenger
picked up the slide, never dropped it off and never came back to work".

Cool video but again as you noted, the gearing. Almost seemed on purpose
for exciting finishes.
And which was bigger the cyclists thighs or the steins?

I've thought about it some more, and I think the idea of the event is
to compare disciplines, that is, skating versus the kilometer ITT. In
particular, the cyclist is not racing on his own, as he has a holder.
If the cyclist were allowed the correct gear and wheel, then it would
make sense for him to start alone, but then he would need to clip in,
impossibly slow for a track sprinter.

The cyclist should use MTB shoes and a flying cyclocross mount.

Thanks for the details. I never saw the race, I just read a report in
VeloNews which only stated what I wrote, pretty much.
