Decals
View Full Version : Decals
I'm looking for decals for an old bicycle that I am restoring. Unfortunately it is an old Nottingham Raleigh. I found some decals listed on eBay but they are not the same. I think that I am going to have to have some custom made or reproduced. The old decals are in good enough shape that I can get good photos of them, I just can't remove while I am refinishing the bike, and they are looking all of thier 40 years old too. Can anyone recommend a custom decal maker?
perhaps try the guys on the classic and vintage section of Bike Forums. There are lots of old Raleigh lovers over there

They reproduce period correct decals.

Nice people ... they have a huge file of images from which they can produce frame decals & probably will have what you want OR can reproduce them if you send them an image of your bike; but, their decals will be VERY EXPENSIVE (well, a lot more than the decals would have cost in 1970).

They reproduce period correct decals. Thanks, I'll check them out. Just what I was looking for!

EVERYTHING costs a lot more than it did in 1970:rolleyes:. Thanks for the input though. I am prepared to pay above and beyond for the old bike though. I've grown fond of it after 27,000 logged miles and many more that never were logged. It just looks tired so I thought I would spruce it up some, keeping it originally equipped of course. I have even found a virgin Raleigh head badge for it. First time I ever paid $45.00 for a little piece of painted brass.

very cool,I have a friend that buys and sells these bikes where I live in Gloucester, Ma. He actually did pretty well for a few months at the start of summer. Gave me a sad old Hercules which I did away with the 3speed wheel and added a new wheelset with coaster brake and did some fabricating to the stem to accept a old school mountainbike handlerbar. Got rid of the fenders and and chaingaurd for a classic bobber look. But original condition is where its at. Who knows maybe someday they'll be worth more. My friend tries to buy them for under 100$ and double his money.

I just scored a complete Raleigh (headbadge included) for $AUD29.90 on Ebay.) :) :) :) :) Congrats! What year and model Raleigh did you get? My old Raleigh has the original head badge but there are scratches and some tarnish on it. Found this new one, never installed on a bike, and jumped on it.
In case anyone's interested, there are lots of scans of old Raleigh catalogues on here: http://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/ , like this:

awesome site thankyou!
531Aussie, thanks for that link. I am a bike geek and love to page through those old catalogues... I often end up finding bikes that I salivated over a few years ago. Wonderful memories... (am I getting that old?).
^ ha! :D We're all getting that old
Yeah, great site, isn't it!
There might be more stuff like that on http://www.classicrendezvous.com/ and http://www.sheldonbrown.com/retroraleighs/
I have a 531c 1988 Raleigh, but I hardly ever ride it. I was devastated when I found rust inside the BB shell, so I don't like getting it wet :p
My 'old' ride is a De Rosa Professional, Columbus SLX tubing. Downtube shifters, C-Record.
I am a De Rosa man, although a recent trip to my bike shop has me seriously considering a 2009 Colnago EPS with Chorus 11 speed. Dang this materialist society we live in... :D
Only sunny days in the country house rides. Thanks. That and the 52x42 gearing on the hilly roads here in northern Lazio will do that to you... :o

Oh my, I can only imagine. Do you not live in one of the greatest places for cycling? Ferarri engineered. Grazie!

My oh my. If the ads for the EPS were like that I would not be considering a Colnago. LOL. :D

From the seller's pics it looks to be a mid/lower end bike from 70's/80's with a japanese frame. At that price I didn't enquire about the details too much. When I get it I'll post some "before" pics before I start refurbishing.
P.S. I also scored a Gitane for $AUD50.
One bike is too many...two bikes aren't enough...three bikes are too many... etc.
