Hey Everyone,

Just got back into cycling. Currently I have been wearing a pair of Teva sandles. They are comfortable and I haven't gotten any blisters...yet. I am not looking for the top of the line high $$$ model but wanted to get a pair of shoes more appropriate for cycling. I have a TREK 7300 with what are descibed as "dual density platform pedals". Any helpful advice for a beginner is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I can't say that I've ever heard of "dual density platforms."

I will recommend that you invest in a clipless system and matching shoes. Depending on your needs, you will decide on "road" or MTB-style shoes/pedals. If you need to walk around for any distance, then chose the latter -- probably Shimano SPD-type.

I advise double-sided pedals, like the Shimano M520. That way you don't have to mess around trying to find the right side. Just step in. Speedplay also make the Frog pedal that is good.

Once you have adapted -- a very short process -- you'll wonder how you ever cycled without. No other one thing I can think of will improve enjoyment of cycling like a good pedal/shoe system.

I can't tell you what shoe to buy. Try them on like any other shoe, and buy the one that fits your particular foot shape. Shimano, Specialized, Sidi, Lake, all make good shoes.

You don't need any special kind of shoe for platform pedals, although it helps if the sole isn't too flexible. Teva sandals are kind of flexible, in my experience. Maybe try a bit more substantial sandal, or any athletic shoe (try some cross training shoes).

All the above assumes you don't want to get into clipless pedals. For that, you need the pedals, and shoes that go with them.

They make cycling sandals which can be used with SPD-type clipless pedals or alone for cycling w/ platform pedals or walking.

I have the cheapest pair I could find - Sette from Pricepoint, which are identical to the ones Nashbar sells (or used to sell) under their own name. Those sandals are great for cycling (either w/ clipless pedals or platform) and walking. They have a stiffer sole than Tevas, but I found them to be very comfortable for walking, maybe even more so than my Tevas since the straps were more comfortable and the sole more substantial.

I can only imagine that more expensive cycling sandals might be even better.

Shimano makes a great sport cycling shoe. You can use with SPD clip or without. Check out their web site.
