Alex Simmons speaking in Santa Rosa, CA on October 1
View Full Version : Alex Simmons speaking in Santa Rosa, CA on October 1
Please forgive this blatant plug. Alex will be coming out to California to hang for a week and then ride the Levi's Granfondo Levi Leipheimer’s King Ridge GranFondo (http://www.levisgranfondo.com/) on October 3. While in Santa Rosa, Alex will be speaking at Echelon Cycle and Multisport Home (http://www.echeloncycle.com/) on October 1. His topic will be: The World Masters Hour Record - A case study on putting power training principles into practice.
You can read more about the speaking engagement and how to register here: RST Training: Seminar: Training & Racing with a Power Meter (http://rst-training.blogspot.com/2009/08/seminar-training-racing-with-power.html)
Hey Alex, do you ever make it to the Denver/Boulder, Colorado area? There's a great cycling community and routes here.
Do you have anymore details on the thursday night bash (October 1) for the presentation? That's not a million miles from where I work...
Might just have to pop up to say hi.

Someone should ask Sam Callan if we can get CEUs for this.

Also for those that want to make it a complete outing, stay in Santa Rosa Levi Leipheimer’s King Ridge GranFondo » STAY (http://www.levisgranfondo.com/lodging/) and ride the Levi's Granfondo (or Mediofondo, or Picolofondo) on Oct 3: Levi Leipheimer’s King Ridge GranFondo (http://www.levisgranfondo.com/)

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm awaiting a reply.

Given I live in Sydney, Australia, no not often. In fact I've never been to Colorado although I have several friends who travel there to train on occasions.
I would like to visit one day.

I have confirmation from Sam Callan that USAC coaches can get 0.2 CEUs for attending the lecture. (I'll have a printed verification for paying coaches at the door.)

Just a bump on this. Now less than one month away. 0.2 USAC coaches CEUs available.

No coach, but I'll try to make it.
I am riding the Gran Fondo but coming up Thursday might be tough ...
Excellent presentation - lots of good info. Thanks to Steve and Alex for a great event.
It was good to finally meet a couple of folk from here.
And to top it all off the beers during and after the event were top notch... Lagunitas Lucky 13 ale - where's the drool emoticon when you need it. ;)

Thanks Swampy, good to catch up.
Yeah - only a minor headache the following morning! :p
Just finished Granfondo today. Great ride!!

I was hoping to get out to that ride but there was a chance of overtime at work. Ker-ching! How was the course? Lumpy?
Headache? I thought you Aussie guys were tough :p I had the 125km drive home and had to be up at 4.45am.

9000 ft over 103 miles. Not LaMarmotte or Death Ride, but tough. Loaded wtih absolutely beautiful vistas.
And...6 hours at IF 0.8 is enormous compared to 10min at 100W about a year and half ago. Alex, you are hard as nails.

Agreed!
Alex, what kit were you wearing?
I rode with some Bobas for a while and think we may have ridden along one another for a while somewhere from Coleman Valley to the outskirts of Santa Rosa (especially after Occidental), where I got my second rear flat on fairly pristine tire (first one was a nail in the first ten miles). I was riding a white steel bike with a powertap hub.

I was in a donated Boba kit, and was an honorary Boba for the day.
If I didn't realise or recall, my apologies. I can't imagine there would have been all that many amputees out there. Certainly none wearing Boba kit. Mind you, at the bachelor's party that night I suspect a few might have become legless. :p

Nice course... It was a ride I was hoping to do... but hopefully there's next year...

No worries! How would you know me?
We did ride close to each other for some time then. I think I said to you once your Boba mates were less than a minute up the road on the rollers after the initial climb on Coleman.
After Occidental, I rode in between you and your closest Boba mate on the descent after the climb from the small climb out of Occicdental on Graton Road, and then I pulled for a bit for my friend (tall guy on a Parlee). I had caught up to him finally at about mile 70 after having a nasty flat in the first ten miles and he was cramping pretty badly so I just rode with him (plus the requisite ribbing and half wheeling) for the last 30 miles.
We rode with all the Bobas after the turn off on Sullivan Road just before Graton until just before the gravel section, where I got my (second!) rear flat on a pretty new tire (nail and then a thorn), so we lost you then.
My total ride time (according to the Powertap) was 5:58 (IF=0.82). Up until I hooked up with my friend it was 4 hours at 0.852.
Too bad I missed you at the finish! Great ride!

Ah - OK - I remember someone calling out they were a ~ minute up the road. We did get them I think but I let them go again on another ascent - I was making my own pace and it paid off as Steve tells me that several of them were pretty cooked at the end and I was coming home strongly. Caught them just after we'd pretty much done with the last major descent and them I stayed at the front end of the bunch for the fast run back to Santa Rosa. 3 of us did a slight detour for the last couple of miles to avoid the dirt section. The names I haven't quite got fixed in my head yet - need to study the map a bit more.
My ride time was 6:04. and another ~20-min of stops for photos and bidon fills and a short while when someone had an early puncture. And the Boba peace offering in the graveyard early on :p

Yeah pretty happy with that but couldn't have done it without you (and the Bobas dangling out there in front keeping the incentive there)!
The Highway 1 vistas were superb. That's where you need a helmet cam.
Being hard as nails may have been handy as I took a slight "Xterra detour" for a close up view of some Redwoods. Dang those US brakes set up the other way round :o:D
