Between my patellar tendonitis and sciatica problems I've bagged "real" running for a while and have
moved to pool workouts - some lap work but also aqua jogging.

I know some people use vests or belts. I've found so far I can stay afloat using just arm
(front/back, like I'm really running) and leg motion. My leg motion resembles more of a bicycle
pedal motion rather than a running stride; i.e. I don't get much front/back distance between my feet
like in a real "stride" on the pavement.

Is heart rate the best indicator as to whether I'm getting an effective workout?

Also how, if at all, does this modify how I get back on the road? Can you get back on the road
relatively more quickly if you keep aqua jogging?

Any experiences are greatly appreciated.

If you want to use heart rate as an indicator, the working heart rate is lower than on land, 13%
lower according to AEA guidelines. Deduct 13% from your on land minimum and maximum range. I believe
you might want to try the support belt so you can maximize the running pattern more than trying to
stay afloat. You might also try adding aqua shoes (or any shoes) for more stride resistance.

IMHO indispensable for (ease of) proper floating at shoulder level.

I´ve found that I can concentrate on fully extending the leg backwards and keeping the (bent 90
degrees at the elbow) arm movements swift; the forward part of leg movement is smaller and less
running-like.

HR is quite a bit lower, I just listen to music on a headphone radio and try to keep a good upright
posture etc.

I trust the experience of far better runners than me who have found it to helpful:-)
