View Full Version : cycling with a guitar and a sidebag? is it ok?
I ride my bike with a guitar and a side bag 20km everyday.
In traffic of course, but my bike is not even a roady.
I put 1.5 slick tires on my MTB and ride it on the road. lame.
Well, with a guitar on my back and a sidebag, they hurt my shoulders!! ouch!!!
Have any ideas? should I buy a new road racer??
I'm doubtful a new road bike will help you carry a guitar and side bag.
Cheers!

Maybe a car? You can get a decent one for what some road bikes cost.

I don't know if this will work for you, but what works for me is to ride the bike "no hands" and PLAY the guitar as I ride. I've done this about twenty-five thousand miles or so the past thirty years, all on the same Schwinn ten-speed.

Nice photo :)
But what do you do if you need to stop suddenly?
I like your website, especially theory of evolution part :)

Thanks! I stay in first gear ALL the time so I'm never going too fast. When going downhill, if I get going more than fifteen or so miles per hour I stop playing long enough to use the brakes. Most of the time on flats I am only going about ten miles per hour. In nearly thirty years of riding so far I have not had any major accidents, or else obviously I wouldn't still be riding on the SAME bicycle I started on so long ago.
I am sitting straight up while I play guitar and have a good view of all around me. In fact it's easier to turn my head and look around sitting like this than when I am hunched over the handlebars like Quasimodo. I plan ahead for when I have to stop and coast to slow down until I have to use the brakes.
IF I had to, I could lay the bike down without it or me getting too damaged, but I really hope I never have to do this on pavement because the bicycle has a nice paint job and more importantly I don't want it bent or damaged where it won't track straight when I ride "no hands" playing guitar.
I hope this answers your question!

I am a guitarist-singer too, but i never try that. I live in Istanbul, and Istanbul city is known as "bicyclist's nightmare" :) Traffic is horrible here and drivers show no respect to cyclists.
Take care yourself!
